"Master Cylinder" (mastercylinder28)

I’ve been considering a second vehicle that’s a little more practical and winter-friendly than my 944. A small pickup seems like a good choice, and I always liked the Ranger. I’ve been shopping them a bit on CL and noticed that all of the 4x4 models have either the 3.0 or 4.0 V6... not terribly attractive choices from a fuel economy standpoint. I know the 4-cylinder Duratec was an option but it’s starting to look like it was only available in 2WD trucks.
What I’d like ideally is a Duratec-powered 4x4 manual Ranger. Tell me that such a thing exists, please!

I wanted to 3.oL Duratec swap my 3.fail B3000, but then I realized it was such a pain in the butt to begin with that I never wasted the time and money.

The 3.0 Duratec would be a great motor for the Ranger/B-series but yeah, it wouldn’t be an easy swap. Starting with a 2.3L Duratec would seem to make an Ecoboost swap pretty darn simple though (on the mechanical side, at least).

I had a 3.0 flex fuel Mazda, and that engine was known as having the performance of a 4 cylinder and the gas mileage of a V8.

Yeah, I’ve never driven one but the specs are pretty dismal, even for its time. I can live with being slow if I’m also being efficient, but if I can’t even have that, I might as well just get an F150 or some other fullsize truck.

3.0L duratec in a Taurus bolts right up to the vulcan bell housing.

Oh reaaalllllly.... That is interesting. I was under the impression that it wouldn’t bolt up. The 3.0 Duratec is a pretty solid engine, and I’d expect decent (low to mid 20s) fuel mileage out of one in a Ranger.
Not that I need another project, though you can get junkyard Taurus motors for like $500 or less.

They didn’t make the Ranger that way, but you CAN find an Escape (or Tribute) with a 2.3L and AWD. And a stick. If you’re REALLY lucky.

99.95 at my local u pull it.
I want to do a duratec build badly, with the same turbo guts that they use in the Noble cars.

The 4.0 is an excellent engine. It did also technically did come with a Duratec, the 2.0 and 2.3 DOHC.

I’m a big believer in that engine. They have this neat rust-proofing feature too.

I’d like to finish the project I was working on when I got kicked out of my sister’s garage. 89 Festiva with a tube frame and Miata front and rear suspension. Then I would do the Duratec mated to a T5 WC. I would actually not hate doing it to an Aspire either. But I’ve already had one V6 Aspire.

I got my first GTO after having my truck for years, and was amazed how much better the fuel economy was with the LS2. lol

Yes, but the 3.0 was the worst in that aspect. I’d average 15-17 mpg.
