i’m considering this as a temporary vehicle until I can find some that I want for a more permanent method of transportation. The guy said that the frame was rusted and just wanted it fixed and he had the opportunity to replace the engine with new one (147k miles replaced with 41k miles) but that seems a bit odd to be if it wasn;t necessary. I’m concerned the truck had a fight with a tree and lost.

4 cylinder jeep, replaced frame??, replaced motor, $6k? Crack pipe! I would probably suggest staying away from this one.

Get a CarFax on it. Take it for a drive and have it inspected. Then make up your mind.
I’ve thought about a Jeep in the past. My last ride was in one that was lifted and had large tires. It was fun to ride with the top down in decent weather. On the other hand, it was loud, had a rough ride, and was squirrely. Part of that was the driver, but a lot of it was a Jeep being a Jeep.
I wouldn’t want to daily a Jeep. Some people love it, some don’t. Coming from a WRX, my guess is that you won’t.

That’s too much money for a Wrangler with frame repair work, which I would not expect it to need (dad’s ‘89 still has a good frame under it). I would not look into a TJ as a temporary vehicle, only because of the higher insurance cost, the terrible gas mileage and the lack of handling.
If you’re still interested I would call Paine Welding and ask them what the Jeep was in for to see if it was wrecked.

Yeah, I’d stay away from something that has had welding work done on the frame and a replaced engine... like you implied, there’s more to the story...
Also, LOL @ the finger over license plate.

Go with your gut on this one. Something does seem a little off, if it’s had frame rust but no mention of it in the ad. The seller mentions frame work, but not frame rust, and doesn’t give a reason for why the frame was worked on in the ad. Probably a solid vehicle, but at that price, I’d look into these:
http://capecod.craigslist.org/cto/5332417436…
http://capecod.craigslist.org/cto/5319331496…
http://capecod.craigslist.org/cto/5327475414…
http://capecod.craigslist.org/cto/5298546561…
http://capecod.craigslist.org/cto/5351791054…
The 4Runner looks like a solid deal, V6, 5-speed, seating for 4, no rot, and $5900.
If you love Wranglers and gotta have one, that one you found still seems a tad sketchy.

this was my email to him and the response. I’d like to take a look at the Jeep some time this week. Can you explain what happened to need frame work and a new engine? Also whats the difference in age on the front and rear tires? Have you used the 4wd with the two different sets of tires on there?
The frame was rusted inone spot. Had it fixed by professional . Had opertunity for engine with 41 K on it. Old engine had 147K on it and still ran when I had it done. Runs excellent. $WD works. Needed new tires in back. Bought new. They have 300 mile son them.

i’m kinda surprised to hear they have a high insurance cost and crap gas. I know its a brick suv but its tiny with a 4 cyl.

It weighs over 2 tons and has an anemic 4-banger. Not a good recipe for good gas consumption by any means. I believe the higher insurance cost is also because of the curb weight and the 4WD.

This seller has a knack for screwing up his typing. Quite honestly, this would be one of those listings that I would not even consider looking at. There are plenty more vehicles out there worth investigating! If you really want a jeep, definitely do not get a 4-cyl wrangler. But depending on what you are looking for (winter beater? just a regular daily? a project?) there are definitely better options. The only real reason to get any wrangler is for an off roader. That is probably the only thing it does well. Everything else is major compromise.

I’m not a grammar nazi, but there’s no way I would buy a car from this person. If you can’t formulate a short paragraph with less than 3 errors, how diligent was he with maintenance?

its going to be how I get to work. not a ton of traffic as I have 3 different routes I could take. I just dont want a boring vehicle. We just got a minivan so it needs to at least be able to take 2 car seats but the chances of that happening are pretty minimal.

I bought my first jeep about 4-5 years ago, it was a manual 4cyl with frame rot.
I just wanted a beater jeep, so me and my brother who is a welder patched up the frame. Mine had 31s on it and was it ever slow, on the highway it would take forever to get up to speed, and hills where asking so much from that 4.
long story short I got rid of it in less than a year, since I found one with a 6 and better frame.
If your are gonna drive it, find one with the 4.0, Mine has 35s on it and I still follow traffic easily.

One of the best mechanics I ever met could barely read, so... going to say that isn’t really a logical jump.

Sure, not boring is definitely a good thing. And Wrangler will rid you of the boring factor, but only if you kinda like driving a terrible car. By terrible, I just mean uncomfortable and bad handling, but loveable just because it has character. See I could find fun in that, but I would never recommend that to sane people lol. What about something like a wrx hatch? '02-'03 would be tons of fun and still fulfill your requirements. I imagine finding a clean one cheap is an issue, but I think it would be a lot more fun.

Oh haha I didn’t realize the username! Yes, then you definitely get why I thought it was a good idea then. But yeah something different could be a good idea then. If you are looking for something along the same lines but more crazy, you could always go find a first gen Mazdaspeed3. I really like those because it's such a sleeper (as long as its not riced out).

That's gotta be one expensive merc! You know what they say, the cheaper it is to buy, it will cost exponentially more to maintain.

DeMuro wrote a good article on the license plate covering phenomenon a while back. Like, this is something that is visible to
every member of the public anytime your car is outside of a closed garage at your own home
. And yet, you deem the information too private to share on the internet, or even with an individual via email.
