Body shop just called me all excited. Found a parts car in Houston and one of his guys is there for a wedding right now. He wants my OK to buy the parts and bring them home. Talked over and got a good price. After some maths I’ve found that it’s pretty much a wash in either worst or best case scenario - if insurance fixes or totals car, either way I have my parts and won’t lose money fixing it.
So I have parts on the way (on a Sunday) and I’m committed to fixing the car, come hell or highwater (realistic worry right now in Texas.) It’s so nice to have a shop that is as excited to fix my car as I am.
Have a rear mounted turbo dyno pull. *Not my car.* STS rear mounted turbo system.

Rear mounted turbo?

Yes dude. Fix that motherf*cker. I remember a friend in college with his GTO keeping pace with another friends zenki S14. How he wangled the wiggling rear end through corners as the Nissan closed the gap, then walked away in the next straight section. My view from the 3rd car was fantastic. So were the sounds

Yeah, STS kits mount out back.
However, STS is out of business and had their assets liquidated.

How do they even work? Were there any advantages over a regular Turbo set up?

Biggest advantage is engine bay space. A lot of cars can’t fit all the turbo stuff without jacking with everything under the hood and the STS system worked around that. Plus the hot turbo was out back staying cooler.
Big disadvantages were that:
A) I think it wasn’t too cheap
B) I want to say it had a lot of lag due to the size of the piping.
C) Possible road water on the hot turbo.

The work the same as any other turbo. Having a few feet of pipe in the way doesn’t break how turbos work.
The advantages are; No need for expensive turbo headers, your engine bay is still relatively intact post-setup, you can get rid of the muffler
The disadvantages are; Turbo lag? Some people say their is none, others say their setup made lots of it, YMMV, more piping = more weight, oiling is kind of an issue now; there are no cheap options for pumping hot engine oil around your whole car, and a seperate oiling system just for the turbo also means a seperate cooling and reservoir system too.

Yessss!!!!! Save the goats!

Yep. Also less heat soak in the engine bay.
Lag I ain’t worried about since I feel like that’s part of the fun of a turbo. STS was purchased by a company that ran it into the ground. They assets were purchased back when they folded and the guy who started it wants to open the company back up.

Yep. 05-06 had duals but 04 has just one.

Yeah, I know a few guys that run (ran?) it on 4th gen f-bodies and were pretty satisfied.

‘04 also had the 5.7 LS1, whereas the ‘05-06 has the godly 6.0 LS2.

I always dreamed of an STS setup for my 99 WS6. Those things were extra awesome.
