And for a long time, it would seem. 466488 miles long. It burned an unreasonable amount of oil.

I wish we could build our small engines as well as we build the large ones.

Seriously. The amount of times I see turbo Ecotec engines come in for some sort of engine failure is insane.

If the cars lasted that long, it would be worth it.

People don't like how much cars cost now let alone with an extra price. Also, on average the only people that have to care about this type of longevity are those with trucks that are used for work. It would be nice is cheaper cars lasted longer but in the long run we wouldn't have the cheaper cars if they did.

In the end, it works out the same if you keep a car long enough though. You either pay more to keep it going, or more for a better built and more dependable car. I know which I would rather do.

If you keep a car long enough is the key phrase. Not enough people do keep their cars long enough for the automakers to car to do it.

The problem is that so few people look past the sticker price. In the industry I’m in (interior trim/doors) it’s the same story. We try to concentrate on quality rather than price, and our most loyal customers give us the math that shows us that in the long run our stuff is cheaper. EG, the milling quality is higher to start with which means the painters don’t have to re-sand so many times, which means it doesn’t take as long to get the house painted, and they will probably give them a better deal the next time around because they know they can get out faster and go paint another place.

But when the homeowner (who knows about nothing other than the original outlay from their wallet) makes the call and finds us a few percent higher...

I must be the last of the breed, then. I’ll drive a car untill the wheels fall off. The longer I have it, the better!
