Kinja'd!!!

So I’m eavesdropping on my coworkers yesterday, just minding my own business trying not to be about my business. I hear one start to explain something then, “That’s how I went to the ER one night. My eyes were burning and I couldn’t sleep at all and it scared the shit out of me.”

Turns out he spent about an hour watching someone weld, staring at the arc.

Pun ensued upon texting my best friend/coworker.

“My god, he’s not a bright man.”

“Maybe this illuminated him.”

staring at the arc.

That’s almost as bad as crossing the streams.

Now I’m just imagining eyeballs liquifying like Nazi’s.

You know those sentences in English that you know won’t make a lick of sense to anyone not fluent in the language? That’s one of them.

Dude didn’t have any newspaper around?

Kinja'd!!!

Laugh all you want but this guy can probably stick weld better than anything I’ve ever done in my entire life.

Oh no, this guy would only start a fire with a welder. The most technical thing he’s done is put stickers on things.

Depending on the circumstances I’d say it’s mostly the welders fault. He is the one using the dangerous equipment; thus it’s his responsibility that nobody gets hurt. You can’t just expect that others know the harm it can cause (both short and long term) and how to protect themselves.

Oh no, I mean the Chinese dude using a newspaper for a self-dimming welding mask. He’s probably an excellent welder, and if you gave him actual tools, would either do an incredible job or not be able to strike an arc.

True, I would probably look at an arc for a bit if no one told me. But this guy works in a shop and industry where there is someone welding here pretty much constantly and I really find it hard to believe no one has ever said, “It’ll put yer eye out,” around him. He may not have understood, which I totally believe, but he was probably around for that bit of info.

Oh yeah, if he can be decent with newspaper and reading glasses from the 70’s imagine what a week of training and nice equipment would do.

Sounds like he hasn’t had enough health and safety instruction to be at that work site then :)

Maybe it’s just me - I used to work with some fairly nasty stuff once in a while, and safety precautions were taken pretty seriously (except when they weren’t, but that’s another story). Thus, I tend to be of the opinion that if your workplace contains dangerous machinery or chemicals, then it’s your employers responsibility to make sure you know about the dangers and what precautions to take.

As a side note, I suddenly remember a situation from when I was about 10 years old. There was a construction company building some stuff in the schoolyard, and a guy welding something with an arch welder, surrounded by a fence - but without anything to shield us kids from the arc! And of course, being curious, I looked straight at it from a few meters away until my eyes hurt.. Can’t remember if I had arc eye later on, but I guess I must have. Pretty irresponsible of the welder IMHO.

I dunno, I think we should just fire him and get it over with.

No, then you’d probably have to pay him severance. Dissolve him in acid and say he just disappeared one day. It’s not even a lie!

Some people.... I remember some guys I attended a lathe course with saying they had some skin burning after welding a couple of hours without long sleeves or some itch in their eyes for welding with goggles that didn’t protect against UV, just because it was too much of a hassle putting on a mask. This guys worked as low-skill welders yes, but if you are going to do this for a life you cannot put your safety second. I can’t imagine welding like that and not realizing it surely would lead to serious skin and eye conditions.
