This is a long shot, but maybe someone around here know the answer.
I keep a small collection of old iPhones at work. We use them for testing software and field data collection. If one needs cell service, I’ll activate a SIM card with a pay-as-you-go carrier.
Last night I had one of these phones in my briefcase. This one is my active tester, so it is tied to my work iTunes account. Sometime during the evening, I misplaced my primary phone, so I did what everyone does - I grabbed another phone and called the missing one. Imagine my surprise when my briefcase started buzzing! The tester phone, the one without a SIM card, the one that can’t make calls, the one that doesn’t have a phone number associated with it, is receiving calls made from my home phone.
What the hell?
When I picked it up, it showed six missed calls, all from my home phone.
I eventually found my work phone, but I am stymied by this mystery. The only possibility I can think of is that wifi was active, it was connected to my home network, and that the calls were being routed via IP. That doesn’t make a lot of sense because the phone doesn’t ring when it is connected to the wifi network at work. Maybe it has something to do with all three phones (home, primary cell, test phone) being on the same network? The home phone is routed through the cable modem, so it switches to IP before it leaves the house.
Any thoughts, Oppo?

is the wifi active, and they are both connected to icloud?
if so might be your facetime. My ipad would ring when ever my iphone would ring for a phone call.

That could be it. I recently activated iCloud on the test devices to make it easy transfer some data I was working on.
Perhaps the work network is blocking facetime. I’ll have to connect to the wifi at Starbucks then have someone call me to see if the test phone rings.

For a while my work iPhone would ring to my personal iPhone when I was at home, and vice-versa. Never did find out why it was doing so.

Probably something to do with wifi calling (if you have that) and iCloud. My family has four phones, and we all share the same iCloud account. When we used Apple Messages, we would all get everybody’s messages. We had to switch to normal texting. So it’s probably something to do with that shared iCloud account.

Settings > phone > calls on other devices. Toggle it to off.

It’s got to be this, we have an old iphone that the kids use to watch cat videos (oh god I hope) and when it’s in the wifi range with the other phone (new phone) it will ring and get text messages as well. Kinda weird, kinda cool.

When at work, the two phones are on different wifi networks (the test network is kept separate from the primary network). When at home, they are on the same network.

Yup. Glad we found out when we did! But with each upgrade of the iOS, it swtiches back to default Apple Messages. Thanks, Apple.

Brian is right. It has to do with your Apple ID being associated with other devices. Basically it’s a feature they made so you can pick up or make a phone call from your iPhone, iPod Touch, Macbook or iPad. I use it on my Macbook all the time.

You don’t have to disable iMessage!!! Just turn off the phone numbers or email addresses associated with them in the settings menu located here Settings>Messages:

Yeah, I think I discovered that already, and it may be how I solved the multiple message issue. I’d have to go back and look at it again. Thanks for the detailed reply.

No problem I would hate to see such a great feature go unused. iMessage is actually pretty awesome since you can use it anywhere there is a wifi connection even when you get no service at all. I’ve used it on plane wifi when flying to California (put phone in airplane mode, then switch wifi on) and when I’ve been underground in a train station. Since it’s built in I don’t have to have my friends install messaging apps or anything like Kik or w/e else is out there. It’s also great when sending videos to people, MMS via text messaging always compresses the hell out of that for me and I end up having to email people videos.
