Wow! It’s a lot of money, but also surprisingly cheap for what you’re getting. I used to get to play with one in the Navy, we used them for looking for hot spots in electrical switchgear. They were like $4k and the size of a megaphone.

Agreed it is RELATIVELY inexpensive, but then so is a Mitsubishi Mirage, and that still removes 10k from your bank account in one go.

Meh, pedantic. I should have said inexpensive. It’s genuine FLIR, which means it’s a quality product. So that’s a very inexpensive price for a quality product.

It’s pretty cheap compared to the TIC’s used by fire departments. Those that are NFPA compliant start at like $5k and go up to $10k+

Like any normal tool, add NFPA / FD compliance and the price quadruples.

I just read about a similar thing in Popular Science that is a plug-in attachment to a smartphone. ~$300. Called SEEK thermal, check it out.

Yeah, I couldn’t imagine how much military-spec ones would cost. $2000 for a non-military, non-FD one would be a nice one. Probably see those for professional uses (eg, HVAC). It is kind of cool you can get that one above for under $1000 and I’ve seen ones you hook up to your smart phone for around $200.

I can’t justify $300 for one of these things either, much as I’d like to. The money’s just better staying with me at the moment.

My phone just shat the bed and wasn't covered under warranty and I need the money for that at the moment.
