Terrible Song, Great Car Chase

Here is the music video for Graham Gouldman’s theme song to the positively lousy 1979 Farrah Fawcett movie, Sunburn . Graham was famous for being a member of 70’s soft-rock band, 10cc and this song is basically as unlistenable as Mr. Gouldman’s face is unlookable. But, there are clips of a really entertaining car chase where Farrah is driving (sometimes flying) an early Datsun 200SX while being pursued by a Plymouth Scamp, I think. Things don’t go well for the American car when it follows her into a bullfighting ring. I recommend Graham’s cover of the Yardbirds’ For Your Love as a better soundtrack. Seriously. I can’t get that damn Sunburn song out of my head.

A car chase at a Marina and a market. That should be fun. Need to see this movie now.

Mr. Gouldman’s face is unlookable alright. But... It’s the ‘70’s!

By all accounts, it’s terrible. But, I love that Datsun, and it does have Charles Grodin who is one of my all-time favorite actors. I don’t know if he ever got too popular outside the States.

Maybe a little too much 70’s. I am a sucker for I’m Not In Love , though.

That Datsun is sweet. I can’t imagine what’s so great about Charles Grodin, we know him over here for Beethoven and Filofax I suppose. He wears a sweater in the latter, that I remember. So what made him so special/great to you?

10cc’s I’m not in love? I might have heard that one too much as a kid. Great song but a bit depressing.

Kinja'd!!!1

Those aren’t the best Charles Grodin movies. I’m not actually sure what Filofax was. (I looked it up. That was a terrible movie.) He was hilarious. I actually think you would like him because he’s very dry. And, wry. He made some great movies in the 70’s and 80’s. Didn’t you ever see Midnight Run with him and De Niro? It’s a classic.

It’s a very depressing song, but it gets me every time. Haunting in a cheesy 70’s way.

Yes, I remember Midnight Run . Which was nice. Great typecasting with DeNiro, Grodin and John Ashton.

Well, the spin-off from Godley & Creme resulted in an even more depressing song. Cry .

Nice? That might be my favorite DeNiro movie. Grodin is also great in the original Heartbreak Kid which is kind of a nastier version of The Graduate .

I used to love that Godley & Creme song as well! I remember buying the cassette tape. Weird video, though. Those guys weren’t exactly handsome.

Kinja'd!!! Jobjoris > Jonee

Kinja'd!!!1

Nice indeed. DeNiro has a few better movies if you ask me...

Cape Fear

Godfather II

Taxidriver

The Deerhunter

Goodfellas

To name a few... I love Goodfellas. And I’m afraid to mention Jackie Brown actually, because he’s got a small part in that. And his comedian skills are awesome as well, Analyze This , Meet the Fockers , wasn’t he in SNL as well?

Didn’t the video show all kinds of faces including Godley and Creme? This definitely was was no boyband created by some marketing god, no.

Kinja'd!!! Jonee > Jobjoris
12/15/2015 at 01:58

Kinja'd!!!1

I like all those movies, too (except Cape Fear). But, he’s most likable in Midnight Run. And, he and Grodin make a perfect team.

I love Goodfellas, too. Amazing movie. I’ve always thought that Ray Liotta got screwed with that film. He never got recognized for it. Everyone always talks about De Niro and Joe Pesci, and even Lorraine Bracco got nominated, but Ray Liotta is in every single scene and he’s terrific. I think De Niro did do SNL once or twice. I don’t remember anything about it, though.

Yeah, there were all these faces singing that song, but Godley and Creme were in it, too. I think they wrote a lot of songs for other people. And, for good reason.

What was wrong with Cape Fear ? Nick Nolte? I’ll re-check Midnight Run to verify your claims.

Ray Liotta is amazing. Whatever happened to the guy, he seemed to be in a lot of late ‘90’s movies but recently I haven’t seen anything of ‘m.

Haha, for a good reason. They could have done a Milli Vanilli or something.

12/16/2015 at 03:17

I just didn’t find Cape Fear all that interesting. It was silly, but not in a good way.

I don’t know what happened to him. He doesn’t do big movies. Maybe he’s an asshole and no one wants to work with him. Do you remember Something Wild ? He’s incredible in that movie.

Kinja'd!!! Jobjoris > Jonee
12/16/2015 at 07:28

But the way DeNiro acted in Cape Fear was quite frightening I would say. Back then. And to me that is.

I do seem to remember it. Didn’t realize Liotta was in it though. How come you, with all of your network in Hollywood, don’t know more of this “we’re missing Ray” thing?

Kinja'd!!! Jonee > Jobjoris
12/17/2015 at 01:19

Kinja'd!!!1

De Niro is kind of hammy in that movie. Which is fun sometimes, like in Meet the Parents, but it bugged me in Cape Fear.

I’ll ask around. I’ve seen him on t.v. a couple times. And, it looks like he’s done some low budget stuff. He’s a good actor, but I guess he always plays the same kind of tough guy.

Kinja'd!!! Jobjoris > Jonee
12/17/2015 at 04:27

Kinja'd!!!1

What do you mean with “hammy”?

He has such a mobster-head now. In Dutch we call it the “Swiebertje”-effect: when you’ve played a decent amount of typical characters you’ll fail in acting other roles.

Kinja'd!!! Jonee > Jobjoris
12/18/2015 at 14:31

Kinja'd!!!1

Hammy is like overacting. Or, acting for the audience where you get all the attention. He’s kind of like a cartoon character in that movie.

We call that “typecasting.” Hollywood like to typecast because it makes things easier. The audience doesn’t have to think. You see De Niro and you know exactly what his character is like because he always plays the same character. It can get pretty annoying both for the actor and the audience.

Kinja'd!!! Jobjoris > Jonee
12/19/2015 at 06:38

Kinja'd!!!1

Ah, get it. It’s been too long, I’ll re-check Cape Fear as well.

Yeah, typecasting. But some actors break out of this, do other stuff and are known as actors. And some end up being seen for one thing only, whatever they do/try. That’s the Swiebertje-effect to us. Like Peter Falk. He’s Columbo. Whatever else he did.

Kinja'd!!! Jonee > Jobjoris
12/21/2015 at 21:53

Kinja'd!!!1

God I love Columbo . He was a quite a good actor, too. He’s incredible in those Cassavetes films. Funny enough, I think a lot of younger folk probably know him better now as the grandfather/storyteller from The Princess Bride .

12/22/2015 at 03:41

Haha, I love ‘m as well. But for the love of God: I can never see the guy doing anything else than Columbo . What Cassavetes-films do you mean? I only know John “Rosemary’s Baby” Cassavetes. God I love Ira Levin.

The films Cassavetes directed. Some of them are brilliant. A Woman Under the Influence, Husbands, Mikey and Nicky. More to add to your list. Ira Levin was the king back in the day. Stepford Wives, Boys From Brazil.

Kinja'd!!!1

I could see them remaking Rosemary’s Baby . If they cast it right, it would be interesting. The husband-wife relationship in the original is definitely outdated, but that is what would make it worth updating. Yes, Boys From Brazil is a classic. You could never replace Peck and Olivier and those Dobermans.

12/29/2015 at 14:41

Kinja'd!!!1

Good point. An update regarding the way people in such a building interact could use an update as well. Go do it.

We could try Jürgen Prochnow for Peck. Laurence Olivier is a bigger problem. We could go bananas and use Adam Sandler for the Jewish connection? It would end up being a parody anyway...

Kinja'd!!! Jonee > Jobjoris
12/31/2015 at 00:11

Kinja'd!!!1

I’m surprised someone hasn’t done it already. I bet someone does have the rights to remake it somewhere. They’ll remake everything with a familiar name eventually.

I haven’t seen Prochnow in a long time. He would be good for Peck. Clooney could do it, too, if you wanted to go mainstream. Olivier is tough. Sandler is too young, but interesting. It would be pretty spoofy if you made it today. Ben Stiller is another choice along those lines. Christoph Walz could also work. I’d actually like to see him as Olivier in a Marathon Man remake even though he’s already played a Nazi.

Kinja'd!!! Jobjoris > Jonee
01/01/2016 at 08:23

Kinja'd!!!1

I haven’t seen Prochnow for quite a while either. And I’m not sure if a white suit would suit him actually. Clooney ain’t terrifying enough I’m afraid. He’d get quite some female audience for the movie though.

WalTz is awesome, I really loved him in Inglorious Basterds . I still have to watch Spectre. He’d be an excellent Weisse Engel, not sure if he’d be a good Liebermann. He’s a villain. Stiller would be an excellent Barry Kohler. Still working on Liebermann. What about Jack Black?

Kinja'd!!! Jonee > Jobjoris
01/03/2016 at 20:14

Kinja'd!!!1

Well, I think a folks would have said Peck wasn’t terrifying enough. For a lot of people, he was the friendly father from To Kill a Mockingbird . I’m thinking it would be unsettling to have Clooney in the role. I was disappointed in Spectre, but it’s not bad. Jack Black is a good idea. He kind of has Olivier’s twinkle in the eye. Steve Coogan could be interesting, too.

New Kids started as a bunch of internet sketches surrounding a group of lowerclass dudes from Brabant (where I live!). They only hang out all day. Have a green Opel Manta. Drink beer. And order Chinese. Ended up shooting two movies, New Kids Turbo and New Kids Nitro . In the latter they ended up saving the Netherlands from Zombies. Hysterical. And Corry did the soundtrack with that Ronnie-character. Who was a friend of the mother of one of the main characters, Richard Batsbak . I’ll see if I can find some of those sketches. It’s so dumb you don’t even have to speak Dutch to enjoy it. Or not.

New Kids Nitro was the last thing they did. Tim Haars (the one playing Gerrie , the short one with red hair) is quite active on tv, both in acting and presenting. His brother Steffen (playing the big red haired Robbie, yes the lowerclass names often are ending with “ie” or “y” over here) came up with the idea of New Kids and directed it all: both sketches and movies. Directed some other movies/tv-series as well but he hasn’t been very active lately.

I like finding really old locations for like Buster Keaton, or Laurel & Hardy movies. My ex-girlfriend lived right near the stairs from this very famous L&H short.

I also drive by here a lot.

That cover is epic. The Quattro one is great, too. They perfectly mimic those old posters.

That movie I just ran into on Netflix. I had no idea what it was, but it’s totally rad. Over the top, and silly like it looks, but it works for some reason. I really got into it. You totally root for that Turbo Kid.

Can’t find it just. It could be in the replies somewhere as well, fintail and I “discussed” a lot for his then upcoming trip to Munich/Austria/Italy. Gave him some great tips for mountainroads.

It’s a bummer Netflix is different locally, I’d be surprised if I could see this over here. Awesome they put it on anyway!

Yeah, I give Netflix credit for offering that one. It’s not for everybody. They do have some weird stuff buried deep. I’ve made you a long enough watch list anyway. At the rate you get to see movies, your schedule is full for the next decade or so.

Believe me: With the list you got me it’s a schedule for life!

I really just need to take some time of anyway.

You do and it’s a good excuse. Just tell your clients you have a lot of movies to catch up on. They’ll understand.

It’s not the clients I’m worried about ;-)
