My grandfathers boat!
I was looking around for a suitable image to illustrate a boat from my childhood and I found one that looks just like it. Then I clicked on !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! to see how much they were asking and you know what? It IS the boat from my childhood! Its for sale and its still in Utah. I think its hard for me to understate how formative this boat was to my childhood. It captivated my imagination so thoroughly that to this day I still dream about those twin chrome throttle levers and the bubble level compass. This is the boat that my Grandfather bought to go offshore fishing in BAJA with my uncle in the 70’s, this was the boat I learned to ski behind, I fell asleep so many times in that cuddy. I know I don’t need it and it makes no sense for me to buy it buy damn am I tempted. I’ve often dreamed of buying it and restoring it but gave up hope of finding it again. Great crap on a stick...what to do?!

Dude you have to buy it. Even if you put it in storage for a year until you can get more funds to fix her up. This is the definition of fate.
How can you tell its your grandfathers?

Very few were twin engines, he ordered his specifically from the factory with twin I4 instead of a single V8 for safety because he was going offshore, plus a few options he had added that I notice and the stern drive supports/key chains are the exact same

There much offshore boating in Utah?
I kid, I kid.
Also, buy the thing and show it your love by working on it to restore it yourself. It will be very rewarding. I have a goal of doing this with the first boat I ever loved (that is sitting in storage right now.)

Do it. As a guy who wants to buy back my dad’s boat from my uncle, for the love of the gods do it.

I went out on a Freind’s boat recently that was some sort of very similar craft. Can’t remember the brand, but it was about a ‘74.

Talking about cars and offroading is fun, but I admittedly don’t have as much experience as I wish I had.
Boating, on the other hand, I do know a thing or two about from being around boats since birth.
It’s awesome that you found your grandfather’s boat. But what would you do with it? How long Would your family love it the same way you did? I think if you wanted to buy into the boating life properly, get a lightly used runabout (easy to find) that will be good for skiing, tubing, camping, and exploring, reliably. Something that is fast and fun to drive and designed with modern comfort and convenience.
Better yet, a brace of jet-skis. Sea-Doo Sparks are a great choice if buying new on a budget. One of my dreams is to go down various places on the Colorado or Green River on jet-skis and stopping to camp along the way for a weekend. Something for which a relatively deep draft boat wouldn’t be the first choice.

You sir, are about to hear the most famous phrase of all boat owners.
“It’s only 3 grand, you have to buy it”

That looks like fun. It seems like that would be an unhappy medium between a jet-ski and a 16-18ft boat. A little more room for the family might be nice or go for the fun and maneuverability of jetskis. In my experience, modern boats are respectably reliable.

This is so/so reliable. It will die on you but with a little love it always restarts. I will say though that this thing raises my heart rate WAY more than my brothers sit down or stand up skis. Something about having your mid torso at water lever makes 30 feel like 100 and small jumps feel insane.

18 or 20 foot Boston Whaler Outback. I think it’s 30 years old or so?

Right? I mean, it’s not something super special or anything, but you spend enough time holding on for dear life in one, and all of a sudden you’d take it over anything.

Yeah, I’d have to fix up the boat I’m looking at, too.
Best of luck with your decision!

Careful bro. In the last year, I’ve got 20 grand into that orange boat I showed you earlier. And mine only has one motor.
Those engines look original, so it’s probably about time for a re-power.
That said, fuck it, buy it.

Those mercs are just just GM 181, they wouldn’t be too hard to rebuild, but if I could find some decently priced stuff I would go that route...these engines ALWAYS sucked (one or the other would would always conk out...but never both) the main trouble would be me trying to keep is cheap on the interior

Get it. I picked up a 1969 Chris Craft that I’m fixing up. If you think you can mark up Jeep and Toyota catalogs with stuff you want, that boat stuff is crazy.

My first reaction is
of course you have to buy it right now!!
But I then realized that maybe the transom or stringers are totally rotted. Or partly rotted which is essentially the same. That would be a deal-breaker, unless you have a very large budget or very extensive DIY skills with sterndrives and fiberglass. I’ve personally done stringers and transom in a single-engine sterndrive and it was a massive undertaking that took 3x longer and cost 3x more than I thought going in.
But yeah, you kinda have to buy it and then if you have to re-sell it later, at least you took the chance when you had it! This boat will never reappear for you.
There’s a guy on the Supra boat forum who found an extremely rare Supra he had been looking for, for like 5 years actively. He ended up finding the actual one he grew up on, and got his hands on it:

I’m in San DIego, so I have the luxury of just taking my seats down to Tijuana. That kind of shit is outrageous in the States.
