The key change is that in 2015 Pirelli nominated two of their four slick tyre compounds for each event, the Italian company - who have added a fifth, ultrasoft tyre to their range for 2016 - will now make three compounds available per race.

This could be interesting for people easy on their tires. So they may go purple on purple tires.

Is this for precision placement on the tracks oriented drivers? Because there are optimal positions where slowing down sharply before the curves, reduces lateral acceleration while inside of those curves. While risk loving drives that cause pile-ups will go passing others at the end of straight sections of tracks, to prevent the passing them back.

With the conservative drivers coming out of the curves, in slightly better positions. By having passing to avoid impacting other drivers, with soft tires allowing agile handling to steer agressively to avoid track collisions. To avoid turbo-charging that favors aggressive drivers, with lower displacement engines for precision control drivers favoring this type of material.

So amateur racing of reduced capacity engines, using lower compression engines. Able to run on economy grade versions of fuel, even if economy reduces many cars from competition, but not the Ford EcoBoost engine equipped Ford Mustang. Much like Economy Van racing, this type of tire will function well in its own niche market area.
