Suggest me a good driver.. I could use a new one and my birthday is on the 16th, figured I’d treat myself. Any experience with the Nike vapor speed driver?
I’m an average golfer, mostly in it for the fun. Hitting the range after a long day at work is probably my second favorite thing, besides bombing the back roads to the golf course obviously ;).

The HP drivers work very well for me.
Wait, which computer monitor do you have?

I hear there’s a certain white hat driver in need of a job.

I’ve heard that the Fiesta ST is a pretty good driver, though if you’ve got the budget I bet that Porsche up above isn’t so bad.
Oh

You have the same birthday as my son. Is it always a huge pain in the ass?

I wish I could be some help but I’m swinging a 10+ year old Cleveland driver haha. I bought a new set of irons two seasons ago, and decided that I could wait on a diver as the two courses that I am usually on are pretty short. However I can hit newer drivers much farther.

I’m the 17th and my fiancee is the 21st. It’s a huge pain.

I went to place and hit them. I wound up with a Taylormade Driver, Callaway 3-wood and a Ping hybrid and taylormade OS irons.
They felt the best for what I could afford based on how I swung.
I’d recommend the same, that you go somewhere with a decent proshop, grab a few models of clubs you can afford, smack the hell out of them and decide which you liked best.

i’m awful at the whole enterprise, but my brother got me a set one season, more as an opportunity to drive/walk around together and chew the fat.
the one useful piece of information i have: my lightweight bag, drivers removed, slides perfectly into the rear shelf of a 996.

Honestly go to your nearest PGA Tour superstore or Golfsmith and hit them all in a simulator. 5 swings each and weed them out. I was a Taylor Made player for years, ended up with Titleist.

It’s crazy actually. I remember when I switched from a Taylor Made Ti Bubble 2 to an XD 580 and gained 30 yards instantly. I haven’t seen any crazy gains like that in years. I hit them all roughly the same, playing a Titleist 913 D3 now. I haven’t golfed in a while though.

I have a Ttitleist 915D2 and really like it. It’s very forgiving.
No matter what you buy, do yourself a favor and get fit for it beforehand. If you are in the USA watch the Golf Galaxy ads for events where the mfg rep will do it for free. The shaft makes all the difference, hit a bunch of different options on a launch monitor and pay attention to the numbers. If nothing else it will increase your confidence in your choice (which is about 80% of the battle)

Yea technology is nuts! I’m not a good golfer. I used my mom’s brand new driver lol (a senior women’s club) and I was crushing way past where I can hit mine.

That’s because I am betting her driver is a Womens or seniors flex which is much whippier than yours probably is. You will lose accuracy. I have a Callaway Great Big Birtha 4 wood from the 90s that I can hit 240 yards because the shaft is only firm instead of X.

Well my sisters is on the 15th, and being so close to Christmas/winter break always made it... Hectic! It's fun though, especially back in school when winter break would start at the end of that week. Made December a fun month.

I was a PGA Club professional for a number of years and for sure go somewhere to get fit. A few people have mentioned hitting on a simulator in a Golf Galaxy. That’s not a bad idea if it is your only option. I would prefer to be fitted outdoors on a driving range with a launch monitor personally.
All of the major brands are going to be pretty close you just need to find a head that looks good to you at address and inspires confidence. The most important factor is getting the loft and shaft type/flex correct so you spin and launch angle are optimum for your ball speed.

Thanks! It's almost winter here so it might be tough to find a place outdoors, I'll give it a shot though. Any more general tips you can throw my way? I'm always up for getting better at golf.

Yeah good point I forget people outside of California have a real winter.
Here are two good places to start :
1. Read Ben Hogan’s 5 Fundamentals book. I it probably one of the best ways to gain an understanding of the modern golf swing.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/067161…
2. Chip and putt! You will see the biggest improvement in your scores to more you work on your game on and around the greens. Think less on technique and more on getting a feel for hitting different types of shots, high, low, bump and runs, etc etc. This should be at minimum 60% of your practice time.

All the Nikes I’ve played have been garbage. I’ve never had a Taylor driver that hasn’t been great. And I’ve had like 7 or 8 Taylor drivers.

Damn I've heard some good things about the vapor.. And the price was pretty good too. But yeah I should definitely go to a shop and try everything out before I buy.

That’s probably the move. I’m at the point now where I just order whatever the best new Taylor is. I’ll stop as soon as I get one I don’t love.
