Got let go from my full-time job in July (downsizing). I’m a freelance video editor/motion graphics designer and animator/occasional photographer and photo editor. I do a lot of contracted work for U.S. Soccer where I travel with the men’s or women’s national team shooting and editing video, so that’s pretty cool, but.......

I feel like I’m at a weird point where I have a ton of choices on what to do, and the thought of a 9-5 is a little weird after making my own hours for the last few months. We’ve gotten by just fine, but as any self-employment goes, you never know when the well will dry up. I’m pretty positive most days, but have some moments where it feels like the search will never end, or where I don’t even know what my options are. A film/video degree doesn’t open many doors in other realms, it seems.

Anyone got any advice for a guy who loves telling stories, is good at connecting with people, loves cars, and also loves golf? Can I get a job that mashes all of them together please!?

You might be able to get in pretty easily with a smaller marketing firm that has a lot of bigger projects. Pitch yourself as someone who can interact with the clients directly. Not terribly exciting, but may be an easy way to settle down and then you can expand your client base to include only the companies you find interest in.

If I were you I’d just bombard the ad agencies in the region

Good advice. Denver’s pretty saturated, so it’s really tough.

Thanks for this. I’m really open to anything, even if it’s not video related. I think that’s half the battle is figuring out if what I’m good at is what I even feel like doing long-term, you know? My eyes surely would thank me from stepping away from the screens.

I hear you. I’m in Detroit and there’s a small market with a lot of really capable people

I think the most important part of doing freelance work is keeping a good backlog of leads for new work and always be following up on them while you’re doing other jobs so you always have work scheduled out.

Connecting with people, cars, and golf? Reach out to all of the country clubs in your area, all the car dealerships, upcoming car shows, etc. Maybe some of them would be interested in doing promotional videos or pictures, i.e. commercials, charity collaboration to promote awareness for the charity and supporting local businesses.

Maybe you could start a non-profit that does video work for people. Take all the profits yourself at the end of the year as a bonus and to keep it a “non-profit” :)

NINJA EDIT: Just saw you’re in the Denver area - maybe some of the ski clubs and places like Aspen would be interested in video promotional stuff as well.

I’m not a video guy so I have no knowledge of the industry, just throwing out ideas :)

The struggle is real.

This is helpful. I know there’s a need at a lot of businesses for good videos (even if it’s just one). Convincing the owners to spend their money? That’s the hard part.

If you can provide sales numbers from previous clients from before/after (even rough estimates) you did work for them would be very important. They’ll gladly spend the money if they have a good indication of a high ROI. You just need the numbers to support it.

And as you probably already know - you’ll hear a lot of No’s. You just have to play the odds. Like picking up women!

Is your name a reference to Joseph Addai?

When the opportunity to merge a once promising running back’s name and a Prince song into a single obscure reference presents itself, you don’t turn it down.

You’re one of the good ones. Where are you located?

I just got fitted over the weekend and I’m going to end up with some new Mizuno JPX 850 Forged (5-PW) and either Callaway MD3’s or Mizzy S5’s in 50°, 55°, and 60°. Then I have to go down the road of matching swingweights at the top of the bag...

Ok, cool. I just followed you over there. I think you have to follow me back before I can send a DM though. It’s @MGilCreative.

St. Louis area. Mizuno irons are fantastic, but obviously pricey and not for the faint of heart. Congrats on the new sticks.

Everything’s pricey when new, but I’m not someone to let go of them after a season, so I think it’s worth it. Shafts are the biggest thing though.

True. I paid almost $1500 for my current set of Titleists, but next season will be my 6th carrying them and I still have no need to look for new irons.

Then I’d call it a success and worth every penny. What’s your handicap?

In college and my mid 20s I got down to about a 3 at one point. Of course I was playing 4 times a week during the summer... now with work and family in the mix I’ve fallen to about an 8 or 9. I only get out around 10 times a season now. You?

This is the first season since I was about 13 (I’ll be 29 this month) that I’ve played with any regularity. I play to about a 10 right now, which isn’t too bad! This season was all about breaking 90...until the 82-84’s kept happening. Ended up shooting 75 in September. Not sure how long it’ll be until I top that.

I’m convinced that if you don’t practice and only play sporadically, the best you can do is hover around 7-10 hdcp. If you want to go lower consistently, you have to practice your short game... a lot.

That’s my theory anyway.

Which is exactly why I’m leaving in about 15 mins to demo some new wedges to round out the (eventual) iron set. Might as well when you’re setting your own schedule, right?
