It has recently come up that I could (if I wanted to) move to the UK (Scotland) for work. If I did, what kind of car options does a Jalop have under 20 grand?

Kinja'd!!!

This Griffith is for sale less than a mile from where I would be working (and the photo was taken less than a block from our temporary housing). £15,980 w/51,000 mi

Current ride is a 2011 Lancer Ralliart (AWD, tuned to 270ish HP).

Do you actually need reliable transportation? Because a TVR is not that. IF you have the option of walking/taking the bus, then you should go for it.

Literally everything. Cars are stupid cheap in the UK. Insurance and taxes on the other hand...

You need to factor in cost of fuel, insurance and road tax.

The road tax on a TVR would be high because of it’s CO2 emissions, the cost of fuel is quite a bit higher than your used to and a TVR would drink it and depending on your age and where you’ll be living, the insurance will either be acceptable or they won’t touch you at all.

I don’t want to be deputy downer but real world things are real world things.

What’s your age and what are you wanting? Age of vehicle, two or four door, hatch or saloon, engine size, manual or auto?

For £17,000 there are quite a few BMWs, Audis, etc...

Exactly. Are there used non-classics in the UK that are over 4k pounds? As a slight hyperbole I thought everything depreciated until below 2k pounds in 3 years.

You can get a GT86 for around £15000

£20,000 gives you SO MUCH CHOICE!.

Tax and insurance is the kicker. Pre 2000 cars have a flat rate of tax, of £145 a year for under 1.55l, and £230 for over 1.55l. 2001-2006 cars have a higher rate of tax, based on C02 emissions, and then 2006 onwards is another rate. For example I pay £490 a year to tax my Honda.

And insurance is just awful. Anything remotely interesting is expensive, and there are huge variations based on where you live. So factor that in when you look at some cars.

Also worth pointing out we dont have the same strict import laws in the UK, so if you fancy something from Japan, Australia, or even US then its not such a problem here.

The prices seem to have gone up in the past few years- the scrappage scheme got rid of a lot of older cars. Still cheap though.

Where will you be moving from? Our resident Tyne and Wear German Schaefft has experienced issues with insurance on UK registered vehicles with a German license, choosing instead to keep his 5’er registered in Germany and return it to the Motherland once a year for TÜV inspection.

The only reasonable insurance prices for foreign license holders are from classic car insurance outfits like Footman James, and with their insurance you have to have a) a classic vehicle, and b) to *promise* not to do more than a certain mileage every year.

Otherwise if you’re not bothered by insurance cost, then for £20k there’s an awful lot of choice. Just be in mind that as a general rule, any car with a dirty engine registered after March 2001 can hammer you on emissions based tax.

Obviously you want some not available in the US and there is nothing better than a proper hot hatch. French are brilliant at them, maybe a Citroën DS3 Racing 207hp and we’ll within budget for one a couple of years old. Or the big dog the Renault Megane Renaultsport 265, not quite the nurburgring stormer the 275 trophy R but close enough. You can get a 1 year old example with sub 10k miles for under 20k

Interesting - so importing a US car isn’t too much of a problem? I’ve read some things about having to own the car for more than 6 months (in the foreign country) to make it easier.

28 years old. Age of vehicle doesn’t matter - more the condition of it. Preferably manual or dual clutch. Engine size - have fun. Doors 2 or more, seats 2 or more. Preferably RWD or AWD (unless it’s a classic hot hatch).

Ah the Megane Renaultsport 265 is pretty cool. That’s one I’ll keep on my radar for sure. I could see myself getting in plenty of trouble with that. Reminds me a bit of my Ralliart.

Alternatively,a friend bought a 1998 merc S500L today with 99k miles and full history for £2000.

Im not sure about a US car specifically, or the owning for 6 months part for that matter but I looked into importing a Honda Integra DC5 Type R from Japan and it seemed very easy, although that was using a company ( Torque GT ) to do the buying and importing, rather than doing it myself.

nope not at all, you can modify your car in anyway you please, only restriction is your wallet, should you wish to get one then I suggest joining the GT86/BRZ drivers club ( http://www.gt86.org.uk/forums/ ) we’re a friendly bunch :)

there is 1 very minor restriction and that is the catalyst, while you will be able to get away with driving on the street without any, come it’s yearly emissions test you will not stand a chance in passing it

At 28 years old with £20,000 to spend your options are wide open. Make sure you’ve sorted out your international drivers licence as you’d have to register the vehicle in your name with the DVLA. What area (roughly) will you be looking at staying?

Well £17,000 for a 2 door, 2-2.5 litre petrol, manual. Will get you any pick of BMW 3 Series and Honda S2000s.

How about some U.S. forbidden fruit like a 2.0TSi Automatic VW Scirocco?

Sporty, reliable, practical (in the most part).

TBD on secure parking. One guy I know parks his Aston on the street and its a very good area. By American standards, it’s twice as safe as San Francisco.

Even more safe when you factor in the police aren’t out to shoot you and the only thing your likely to get is a ‘Glasgow Kiss’ (a head-butt). Lol.

With the large array of vehicles for the price range it may be a good idea to just test-drive a few when you get here. Some will let you have a 24 hour test drive and take it home and see how you like it.

I’ve removed the secondary cat on mine as that’s overkill for our emissions, just got a sports cat on the manifold as only 1 is necessary and sounds lovely :)
