This
2016 4Runner (in any trim, sr5, trd, 4x2/4x4...whatever)
has more payload than this
Ram 1500 5.7 4x4 (any bed length, any cab configuration)
I guess the 4Runner ranges from 1550-1700 lbs payload and the ram tops out just below 1500. Crazy considering they both use similar suspension setups. Nothing special, just something interesting I stumbled on today.
I know its not exactly apples to apples but its an interesting thing to actually see side by side.

I wouldn’t want to drive a 4Runner loaded with 1550 lbs.

I couldn’t find it... sure its PAYLOAD and not GVWR?
PS I looked up the 2016 RAM 1500 V6 and payload STARTS at 1883lbs....

Yes, payload (GVWR of 6300 - 4750 curb). And yeah the v6 has much higher payload but check out the 4x4 5.7 payload, non above 1500

I drive with more weight and less power all the time in the similarly sized cruiser...aint no thang.

It’s not the lack of power that concerns me

brakes are fine too. Like I said I have more weight and smaller brakes and i never feel in danger, it stops just fine. 6300 lbs isn’t THAT much truck to drive around. with just me in it my cruiser weighs 5600 lbs. As for cargo management? its not that hard to secure it and 1500 lbs is easier to add up than you might think. More than just cargo weight, it’s a nice safety marine for adding bumpers, racks, extra fuel, winches, dual batts, recovery gear, etc etc without wrecking the truck off road. On my last trip I was at 90% GVRW max and it was just me and a relatively unmodded truck. Some of these rigs can get really heavy.

Aha, if you play with the drive and cab/bed configurations, you can drop it to 1300lbs. Nice catch.

You’re forgetting about the raised COD with less ground clearance, the much more stressed suspension, the worse handling, the thing is just begging to roll

its actually a little shameful how little s ome of those rams can carry. Comfort I guess.

COG? Yeah obviously its going to be different to drive than unladen, but its not like lotus turned whaling ship. Even with my lift, bigger tires and 10 gallons of gas on my roof I never felt even a little unsafe at high speeds even in 80 mph legal Utah.

Its not like the other trims are any better. The only winning front on a new 4runner is to remove and replace it with an aftermarket bumper

Yes, but that’s not adding 1500 lbs to a 4600 lbs vehicle.

People with 1500’s carry dirt bikes/groceries/air, if you want payload get an HD.

I’ve driven 1000+ miles with over 1000lbs in my 4Runner with less power and protective nannies, I was completely fine. The weather wasn’t nice either.

Yeah if you’re getting a quad cab with a 5 foot bed you aint carrying cargo, except groceries maybe. I think that’s why they went with coils anyways. If you want a REAL truck, Ram will sell you a 2500+.

What’s interesting about the RAM line and they probably can carry both the least and the most payload

Peugeot 403 Camionette’s maximum payload is 850 kg (~1870 lbs). The brave 1.5 liter engine pushes out 58 hp so it might be rather slow with the full load. At some point a 1.8 liter diesel with 48 hp became an option. Even though they might be underpowered these were surprisingly sturdy things.

Okay, to start (this will be the typical “on paper internet forum”-type post), Toyota’s website:
http://www.toyota.com/4runner/featur…
Dodge Website:
http://www.ramtrucks.com/model-compare/…
Starting with Curb Weight/GVWR,
Toyota 4Runner Trail: 4750 lbs/6300 lbs (1,500 lbs total cargo carrying)
Ram 1500 4x4 Crew: No Curb Weight Listed/6600 lbs (lowest total cargo carrying ability shown at 1630 lbs)
Now, let’s add something else: towing.
4Runner: 5000 lbs
Ram 1500 4x4 Crew: 10340 lbs, lowest rating
Just for giggles, fuel economy, city/highway/combined:
4Runner Trail: 17/21/18
Ram 1500 4x4 Crew: 16/23/??
Really though, we could play with numbers all day. They are two different vehicles, two different markets, and two different purposes. They’re both well-built, and damned impressive. I
like
what the 4Runner can do, and I am equally impressed by the Ram 1500 (I rented one with the 5.7L, that thing sounds like a damned muscle car when I went full throttle!).

Well I know its not exactly apples to apples...I may have said as much...but numbers play out that the 4runner of any type can technically carry more weight than any 4x4 5.7 ram. I just found that interesting, not saying one is better than the other because (obviously) they aren’t cross shopped much. btw I used this for the ram. Also, 6300-4750 = 1550.

its modern day spirit lives on in the Ram 700 (Fiat Strada) that has a 1500 lb payload and gets by with a 115 hp 1.6 liter NA Neon derived (yeah, neon) I4.

Wait... A Full size Ram 1500 hauls less than my truck? My 22 year old miniature poodle of a Ranger has GVWR of 1725lbs over curb weight

Funny. My old Mazda is rated for 1,300 lbs. here it is last weekend with about 2,200 lbs (1 yd) of dirt in it.

What’s even funner is finding the SUVs that would have a problem when 4 larger dudes go on a ski trip. Sub 1000lb payloads are funny.
A Subaru Forester has a 900lb payload capacity. Dad-250, Mom-150, Teenage son-160, Teenage daughter-120, Scruffy the lab-90. That leaves 130lbs for luggage, a third child, or the tongue of a trailer. Makes you realize how many vehicles on the road are way overloaded over factory specs.

A jku wrangler rubicon is either just above or below 1000 lbs...and that's before the light bars and decepticon stickers are added (or a hardtop for that matter)

Okay, my math is off, and ya got me. I’ll go put on a dunce cap and sit in the corner (tongue firmly in cheek here).
I think they’re both fantastic vehicles. One almost could cross-shop the two, it’s a testament to the engineering that was put into both vehicles. It shows that vehicles are no longer staying confined to any particular sandbox, one way or another - their purposes are expanding.
