Really? I see many with double that. Looking at one used car website I found 233 mk4 Golfs (I excluded the Jetta) with more than 160k km (100k miles). 37 of those with more than 320k km (200k miles). All within a 75 km (50 miles) radius of where I live, and the biggest city within that radius is 200k people small and I’m way less than 75 km from the sea. 512k km was the highest mk4 Golf odometer I found within 75 km on that one website. Moreover, high mileage vehicles tend to be exported east so there would’ve been more.
I’m not a fan of VWs, but the German built mk4 is known for its
longevity
.
edit:
here’s a link
to 11767 1998-2004 Golfs and Boras (Jettas) with at least 160k km. All for sale right now, on one website.

Friend of mine has a MK IV Pumpe Düse that is still running strong at 200k miles. Not all BMW drivers are asshats who can’t be bothered to park properly, and not all MK IVs are junk.
