It began simply enough. I pulled into the parking garage this morning and got out, and as a young guy walked by, he said, “I really like your car.” I thanked him and then complimented him on his, a 335i. He said he’d considered an E90 M3 like mine, but since he was a dad like me, but taller by a few inches, the extra room in the F30 was pretty critical. He said a friend of his with an E9x took his to autox quite a bit and I shared that I’d been out to our local track several times in mine. We both talked about taking drives to the Ozarks to enjoy the incredible back roads there. He mentioned the C5 Z06 he had, and said he was considering swapping it out for an S2000 (for lower consumable costs at the track). I asked if he knew he could fit, and shared that I barely fit in the new Miata. We realized we were both part of a local Caffeine and Gasoline group. All of this in a 5 minute conversation on the way from our shared parking garage to our our shared office building, and it all started with a simple compliment.
Moral of the story: never miss the opportunity to strike up a conversation with a car guy or gal.

Loud exhaust saves lives and starts conversations.

I’ve wound up talking to a couple owners, including a few who have walked up while I’m taking pictures of their car. I think they get confused at first, but when I explain to them why I’m doing it they’re usually flattered.

Hell yeah more car friends! I wish some of my friends were into cars, once I start talking about them their eyes glaze over.

I love when that happens! A few months ago, I was out on a consulting job that took me an hour. However I ended up being there for 3 because my client’s neighbor saw my E90 and came out to talk to me about it. He eventually walked me over to his garage... where a perfect 993 turbo sat next to a perfect 2002tii! He’s the original owner of both!
It is funny though, these situations happen much more often when I’m in a BMW. No one cares about my Audi, but I almost always get at least a wave in the E46.

Oh damn... that’s awesome. I can’t imagine what those two are worth now (not that he’d ever sell them).
There is something about an M3, especially older ones, that tells other people you’re an enthusiast. I personally assume that most Audi S owners are, too, but maybe it’s a smaller percentage. There’s a S5 I’ve been seeing regularly on my drive home - I still think that’s one of the most beautiful cars on the road today.

There were upwards of 50k miles on both, so he definitely drove them, but without looking at the odometer you would never know.
To be honest the S5 is what turned me on to Audi. Two friends have them and I was really impressed with the tenacious grip. You’re right though, M3’s as well as M coupes/roadsters at this point are almost always driven by an enthusiast.

Oh hell yeah, if you see an M coupe, you KNOW the guy is legit. Saw a clownshoe on a car carrier the other day and wanted to follow it to its final destination...
The new M3 is old M5 territory in size, so there may be more M5-type drivers in those going forward, but the suspension is still targeting the enthusiast (not softer like the M5).
I can’t wait to see an M2, 1M, E46, E92 & F82 M3 supercomparison.
