Christmas comes early.  SLS Transmission showed up 6 weeks early.

Kinja'd!!!

I think someone at AMG pulled some strings when they saw my posts on the official forums.

Hopefully have it back sometime next week...to start the 1200 mile break-in period over which should take all of 2 weeks :D

Post if you feel any differences in the way it shifts.

That thing is probably worth more than most Honda Civics.

Awesome! Was hoping you'd get it faster after reading your last post about it!

Congrats! That’s quite impressive given the time length you were originally told. Sometimes good things can indeed happen to good people.

As the owner of a Honda Civic: I’ll accept that statement, assuming worth is measured in dollars.

Reading your past posts it seems like it could be a double edged sword.

Good because it’s early, and you get your car back sooner.

Bad because its not the most recently built trans out there. If they’re failing and updating newly built ones as you said, there could be upgrades yours is missing out on.

But then again, you still have warranty.

Christmas came early for me too. Got a new GTI tuning kit yesterday.

It should have a “Production month/year” stamped somewhere on the new one. I’ll ask the service guy what it says.

The latest revision was sometime after the last Final Editions rolled off the line in April 2014, so as long as it’s been made within the past 18 months I should be good.

Wo. SLS. It’s awesome that you actually drive it.

You could buy like 11 Honda Civic del Sols for the price of a single SLS transmission . :]

Now you don’t have to worry about all the service techs fondling your car while it’s in the shop for much longer.

I think in an earlier post BTU said $20k.

You mentioned a clutch pack failed. I still don’t understand why DCT transmissions do not have serviceable clutch packs.

They are clutches. They will wear until they fail.

Part of me thinks Getrag intentionally engineered them to be too complex to be dealer serviceable. Conspiracy theorist in me. You make a lot more money on replacement transmissions than clutches. And with this transmission being almost exclusively in cars that cost $200k+, the owners and manufacturers may just be writing it off as the cost of doing business. If you aren’t developing an in-house DCT and want something that can handle over 500hp, this transmission is one of the only choices. I’m curious if there were any major design changes before they started using it in the AMG GT, because that car is a much higher volume model and will see more daily driver miles than SLS’s do.

Significant changes in fact. They went so far as to change the *redacted* and heavily modified all of the *redacted*. IIRC they even made them slightly more serviceable. Unfortunately they’re not backwards compatible though. Actually, I have no idea what they changed but have been told in person by the guys who engineered the SLS and the GT that significant changes were made. If I ever find out I will post about it.

I’d imagine that the reason it’s not serviceable is that would increase the engineering complexity, and therefore the costs. As you say the SLS was a low volume car, so the engineering costs can’t be spread out, as opposed to the GT which can go through re-designs.
