I need a race car. And when space and budget afford it, I’ll buy/build one. I know this is dependent on series, but if I wanted to race in NASA/WRL/SCCA/etc, would a car with a salvage title have any negative effects? I’m guessing no, but

popped up on Craigslist and got me wondering. I can’t buy it now, but these things will be good to know for future reference.

Depends on why it has a salvage title and what you are going to do with it.
If it’s got a mangled frame/floor/roof and somebody managed to “fix” it the car may not be safe even with gear. If it’s a flood repair, who cares?

Nope, no issues as long as the car’s structurally sound. Most people don’t register/insure their race car.

Rally cars have to be street legal

Yes, but cars with salvage titles can be street legal, too, if they’re insured. I think. But this is a great point. Could I build a rally car with a salvage title?

I think for salvage titles, they need to be inspected to make sure they’re street legal before you can register it. Not impossible, but I’ve never tried to register a salvage titled car

As long as the chassis is straight and the pickup points are all good, there’s no problem there. I’d venture to guess that most Spec Miatas start with salvage titles, and if not, after a season they’re worthy of one. This is especially true of rally cars.

^This!
Don’t hack up a nice car if you have a mechanically and structurally sound one that works otherwise. Salvage is fine.
