!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! I finally took my car to the dealership yesterday after having to wait 2 weeks for my appointment to finally come and here’s what they found: Carbon build up on my throttle body, a badly torn air duct (which I have no idea how the hell that happened) and a really dirty air filter. Of course none of it was covered by my warranty because that seems to always happen when you take your car in for service. They said that’s whats causing the service engine light, the weird transmission shifts and could be the reason for the not so stellar fuel econ. I’m just glad it was nothing serious.

Don’t those have electronic throttles? Most of the time they’ll compensate for a little bit of build-up, but that would definitely explain the rough idle if it got too much in there. That still shouldn't happen on a modern engine, so keep an eye on it - there may be a problem with the EGR system dumping too much exhaust back into the intake.

no it isn’t sadly.
as a GM dealer employee , we’ve had quite a few do it.
pull out spark plugs , spray in upper engine cleaner (2 cans) , allow it to soak overnight , then re install plugs generally good to go.

That was my thinking. Which lead me to think either this is a common issue for Sonic’s or this build up had either already started when I bought the car or built up quickly since I’ve had it.

Quite a few Sonic’s do it? Or GM vehicles in general? Because I asked the service adviser yesterday does she see a lot of Sonic’s come through with the same type of problems and she said not really.

well in our market they’re called Holden Barina , but yes have had a few.

Well there’s your problem. The main ingredient of nothing is carbon. Just ask Stephen Hawking. Or his voice machine.
