Yeah, the tweets are getting a little hackneyed at this point, and it’s easy to pick on the current batch of Republican talking heads. I always say social media has too much downside for politicians and celebrities.

Is it better to say/tweet nothing? Or the generic, secular “my thoughts are with you”? Or should you go out on a limb and push for mandatory gun ownership, a la Kennesaw, GA?

A+ for sensationalism. They got attention, they could really care less whether you agree with them or not.

Personally I find the cover awful and not neccesaary. I also find Twitter in general unnecessary so the politicians’ platitudes I feel the same way about.

The Daily News is fun, but The Post is where it’s at for the serious bad taste.

If there was a facebook page that banned you after 3 political rants were posted, I would totally sign up for it. I’m starting to miss the days of seeing pictures of peoples food and new haircuts.

Personally I think this is spot on. There needs to be a call for change. Praying to some deity isn’t going to stop these mass shootings. Mandatory gun ownership won’t do it either.

This guy yesterday was re-tweeting every single politician that said “thoughts and/or prayers” with the amount of money the NRA donated to one of their campaigns.

Kinja'd!!!

I’m not going to take sides in that*, but it was kinda clever. His Twitter game was strong yesterday.

*I’m serious, I’m not going to discuss this on Oppo.

I think the secular “thoughts” bit would also fall under “meaningless platitudes.” Also, this headline is directed squarely at people who purport to be policy makers, not us average citizens who realistically do not have many other responses besides thoughts/prayers/futile outrage.

This is nothing new from the New York tabs. It’s what they do.

I’m not saying that “journalists” should suger coat the news to avoid being offensive, but there’s a difference between journalism and sensationalism.

Definitely agree with the “thoughts” falling under the same category.

Or should you go out on a limb and push for mandatory gun ownership, a la Kennesaw, GA?

Bring back the Second Militia Act of 1792?

Though I suppose you'd have to expand it to all able bodied persons regardless of gender and race.

In a very sensationalist way they do have a point. Platitudes galore, but zero willingness to actually address the problem.

This isn’t about average people praying, it’s about politicians acting like hypocrites. Politicians with actual power to change things, yet unwilling to do so.

I agree, to a degree — it definitely reeks of political grandstanding. For some reason, they feel compelled to make sure they’re saying exactly what everyone else is saying, no more or no less. God forbid they actually pray, work on some legislation, but say nothing and then get accused of being heartless.

/damned if you do...

This is wholly talking point cockery. Most of those pushing the “fuck your ‘thoughts and prayers’” line have a long and storied history of using that exact phrase in their tweets and articles. Sam Stein of the HuffPo is spectacularly egregious on this point. Also very busted, Matt Yglesias.

One important thing to note, though, is that it’s wrong to tell people to do something useful instead of thinking and praying; We should do something useful in addition to it, and stop bragging about it. It should be a given that everyone who has heard the news is thinking about the victims and their families - that’s just human nature. And it’s expected that religious people will pray for them. These things are obvious, and that’s why it’s irritating for people to tell the world that they’re doing it. We all know you are, and that’s good, but now you’re demanding credit for it as if nobody else is doing it. That’s just stupid.

I normally don’t care much for The Daily News, but the cover is spot on. It’s not that they’re offering their condolences while at the same time working towards some solution, or even - god forbid- just starting a dialogue about the problems with gun violence in this country.

No, literally their only reaction to these constant mass shootings is nothing but their “thoughts and prayers” and that’s the long and the short of it. Nothing more beyond that. Then in another week (if it even takes that long) when there’s another mass shooting, they’ll once again offer their thoughts and prayers to the victims’ families and do nothing else beyond that.

I mean, can you really call it sensationalist when it’s spot fucking on?

That’s nor what this is saying. It’s saying that thoughts and prayers aren’t enough if you then keep on acting as if nothing happened until th enex catastrophe. This year is only 330+ days old, yet there have been 350+ massshootings so far. At some point “thoughts and prayers” aren’t enough anymore.

Matthew 6:5

“And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.”

Problem is, nobody wants to even think about 99% of those shootings because it’ll lose them votes. Best to go on ignoring it, throwing out rhetoric and focusing on the 1% that make the news without offering any real solutions.
