For tonight anyway. I freaking bent the tool that holds the flywheel in place while trying to remove the flywheel nut. I’m over rotaries. All they do is go brap brap BEND YOUR TOOLS and leave you helpless. Here’s the car after I quit. Good night.

Rotaries, especially in the Rx-8 scare me.

From what I’ve learned, they’re only scary if you don’t drive the piss out of them. If you baby an Eight, you’re only asking for trouble. They’re not meant to be garage queens. Drive them; hard.

Apex seals and cold starts scare me the most, there’s just too many abused 8’s out there to tell how the owner’s treated them in that regard though.

Boy aint that the truth. It does take a certain amount of mechanical sympathy to get the most out of an eight. Unfortunately, Mazda produced a car that was easily drive-able for the first half of it’s life by your everyday commuter. You can’t treat those cars like an everyday commuter. You
can
drive it everyday but you have to think. Think about the way the rotary engine operates. It’s special cooling needs. Don’t shut it off immediately after starting it for fear of flooding. Think about how fickle the oiling system can be with those engines. Monitor your rotary. Listen to your rotary. Do not pretend your rotary is a Honda. Roflcopter can tell you all about how to rotary correctly. He’s at 120k miles, original Rene, daily driven, and regularly flogs it at autocross. I mean really flogs it.

Nailed it man,
Kinda similar deal with the 2.7t Audis. Got to let it warm up and cool down after hitting the boost, there’s horror stories about turbos blowing up because for this exact reason. Take good care of them and they’ll last the life of the car, flog the car before letting it warm up properly and you’re just asking for trouble later down the line.

Is that an FC? I had a non turbo that was stripped out and race prepped (suspension, exhaust, street port) in high school I had that same Koyo radiator, they can definitely be a bitch to work on that's for sure

Ah, must have been fun! Yes it’s an FC. Was a non-turbo, now its a bridge port turbo with a crap ton of crap done to it. I’m actually taking care of it for a friend while he’s overseas. He left the NA drivetrain in, to include the clutch, and with the big freaking turbo that’s on this thing, it pretty much demolished the drivetrain. The clutch blew one day on my way home from getting coffee. Granted, I was getting on it in third gear. When everything was pulled apart, I noticed large metal chunks coming out with the trans oil and the diff was ridiculously grindy sounding. I told him what happened and he laughed. I then scooped up the parts he had been storing for the drive train swap and began doing the Turbo 2 drive train swap for him so he can drive it when he gets back.
It was easy until I got to the flywheel nut. That thing is a real bitch.

That wrench had more torque than the engine.

Yeah but that fan shroud is in the way. :/ Can’t do it. Too much fan shroud removal.

Maybe, but tomorrow I’m picking up a 1,000 lb/ft air impact gun to try the job with. If that doesn’t work, I’ll get the 1,400 lb/ft gun (150% price increase). If that doesn’t work, I’ll be on the news for arson on my own home.

Agreed. There’s a senior in my high school Calculus class who has an RX-8 that she apparently purchased for around $7500...something tells me she doesn’t quite know what she’s getting herself into...
