Bratwurst stopped in mid-air, beer steins hit the deck. Brows furrowed. This year’s Essen show campaign car was a little different. Na, so wass!

Every year at the Essen motor show – think Euro SEMA – the Verband der Automobil Tuner e.V. (the association of German tuners) and the Bundesverkehrsministerium (German federal transport department) announce a campaign car for the TUNE IT! SAFE! initiative.

The TUNE IT! SAFE! (yes, really) campaign started in 2006 to combat counterfeit tuning parts, and remind people that you should tune your car but not be stupid while doing it. The campaign cars are all fantasy police cars.

But this being Germany, the most foreign fake cop car they’ve ever done is a BMW Mini. So having this here good ol’ boy in Polizei livery is a bit of a departure.

The actual Chevy is a fairly stock C7 stingray, with just some carbon addenda around the edges, a set of Hankook’s finest, the stickers and that light bar on top.

So you won’t see it chasing 911 turbos on the Autobahn any time soon, interesting as that would be. It will, however, tour lots of regional shows to remind the locals that there are sportscars that aren’t Porsches, Ferraris, McLarens or Lamborghinis.

This makes me pine for the good ole days of Need for Speed and Test Drive where every sports car could be a cop car.
