Because now is the winter of my discontent, and contrary to popular belief, the heating system in the Land Rover works just fine.
What doesn’t work just fine are the bulkhead vent seals, which have been leaking some frosty morning air through the cabin. I put in new lower door seals all round a month ago because the military seem to see warm soldiers as an optional expense. An option that they didn’t tick. This worked well enough through Autumn, but now I can feel the wisps of winter coming in through the front. This would be fine if the heating system could cope with a little influx of cold air, but as it stands, it can’t. Series vehicles and Defenders have an oversized cooling system to allow the running of external machinery through the P.T.O. when stationary. In the real world this translate to an engine, and therefore a heating system, that can’t get up to temperature in anything but lukewarm conditions.
So a muff and some vent seals it is, then maybe I can survive until the heater system fails.

Few things feel better than a good heater after clearing ice and snow off.

I had a Mercury Tracer with a lukewarm heater like that. To get any heat at all, I had to drive from October to April with the radiator completely blocked with cardboard.

I went most of last winter before finally gaining the courage to fix my heat in my car. Never again will I do that one. I hated myself afterwards because where The thought of taking the dash out was intimidating but in reality it took less than an hour to do everything.

Pretty sure I’ll be rednecking(?) a fix like that for now too, although cardboard won’t last long around these parts.

This is the time of year to replace vent seals, because they’re a bugger to condition into the proper shape. You basically have to install fresh, have a friend push on the vents really hard, and latch them as tight as you can... there to stay until the seals have accepted it. Which could be weeks, really, with a cycle of them open and once again forced tight somewhere in the middle. Bottom line, vent seals (on the Series particularly) don’t like to be installed.

Just wrap the cardboard in the tape of your choosing (not masking tape obviously) It works surprisingly well.
