Kinja'd!!!

An ‘09 C30 R-Design with a 6-speed stick. It’s awesome. Pretty low miles and it was a very good deal. I’ve always thought these were such pretty cars, and I need something more comfortable than my Renault Le Car and ‘92 Nissan NX to chauffeur my mother around when she’s in town. After daily driving older cars for as long as I can remember, I forgot how nice it is to have something new(ish).

Kinja'd!!!

It’s got leather seats and I can hook my phone up to it for some reason. Who talks on the phone while they drive? You kids are crazy. It even plays CD’s! No more Jack FM, or worn out cassette tapes for this guy. Plus, I can change the volume with buttons on the steering wheel. These Volvo guys thought of everything.

Kinja'd!!!

Not the most practical hatch, but it should suit me fine. And, it’s a hoot to drive. That T5 engine is great. Now, my other 3 cars don’t add up to 200 horsepower combined, so 230 with a turbocharger feels like a rocket ship. And, it does have a certain smoothness that’s quite pleasant. Since there’s a Mazda underneath, it handles pretty sharply. I had a good time yesterday in the twisty L.A. hills. I’ve read about terrible understeer and numb steering, but it’s fine for a modern FWD car.

Kinja'd!!!

And, I can’t stop looking at it. This is one of the best looking cars of the past 20 years. I like it a lot better pre-facelift and with the body colored trim. And, the glass hatch with the big “VOLVO” lettering is killer.

Kinja'd!!!

I was scared of betraying my convictions by having something so new and shiny, but these guys aren’t going anywhere and it is nice to not have to pray while merging onto the freeway. (I’m exaggerating. They’re a lot peppier than they look.)

And I love your other cars too. Especially the LeCar.

Very nice. I’ve always liked the 5 spokes volvo puts on its R cars, they fit the whole clean and lean Nordic aesthetic. What do you think of the transmission? I heard that the feel of the manual is not great.

The transmission is fine. It feels good to me, but you see what I’m comparing it to. It shifts smoothly, I’ve not encountered a moment where a gear was hard to find, or anything. The throw is not too long. Clutch is really nice; not too heavy, but enough resistance to know it’s there. I really like driving this car.

I think it’s more comfortable and, yet, every bit as sporty as the last GTI I drove. Not as practical, but better looking.

The Le Car loves you back. It loves everyone that’s nice to it.

It’s not an R like the R’s of the old days. It’s mostly a trim package, but with a somewhat sportier suspension. And, that T5 engine is indestructible.

I test drive a 6spd 2011 C30 Level 2 w/ a polestar ecu. I hated the shifter, it was such a loose unresponsive shifter. If anything it needed a solid a rear engine mount or something else to tighten the shifter up. I found the steering to be a bit to light. I see it as the Volvo engineers made a great car, then the big wigs in HQ’s told them it had to be safe and they turned it down.

11/30/2015 at 15:21

Kinja'd!!!0

Exactly. It’s not a WRX, but I knew that going in. The C30 is snazzier, but the SE-R was a terrific little car. What year is yours? My NX is the lowly 1600, but if I’d love to find a not-trashed NX2000 which was basically an SE-R with that little hatchback body on it. Amazing handling on those things.

A 2009, not one of the great classic ones. Now that I have the FoST, I would like to get my hands on a B13 one as a beater, but most of them are a little too beat up by people who had the same idea.

Kinja'd!!!0

I can see that if you’re really looking for a performance car, but I find the shifter to be perfectly acceptable for every day “fun” driving. My other cars are like a wooden spoon in mashed potatoes, so the C30 feels sharp to me. I haven’t looked, but there’s probably some kind of aftermarket upgrade for the shifter. The R-Design apparently has improved steering, but I imagine that Polestar had it as well, so maybe it’s not improved enough.

Yeah, I don’t think there’s a clean B13 to be found anywhere. If I could have gotten a FoST for the same price as the C30, I would have bought a used one. I love that car, too.

How do you drive this in LA traffic?! I was starting to have a hard time with 130hp in a 2600lbs car before I left, and that was 3 years ago. You need some serious power to merge comfortably/safely these days.

The NX is a fun car and probably right on the bleeding edge of not being fast enough for LA traffic. This is funny in a way, considering the NX was a fairly fast car for the size when it was built... Now, though, where slow car lists start at 8.0 seconds and higher, most plebeian transportation appliances can outrun it. Then again, you’ll lose them with the handling...

I had access to a press loaner C30 when they first came out, and I absolutely adored it. Didn’t want to give it up. I think the contrast trim really accentuates the car’s lines, but yours is lovely. Congrats!

Kinja'd!!!0

The Le Car is not even the lowest horsepower car I’ve driven in L.A. traffic. I used to take my Subaru 360 everywhere. Now that was an adventure. I just have been driving these cars for years, so I know exactly what they’re going to do and have gotten used to it. The Renault is only 55 horsepower, but it’s light as a feather and fairly nimble, so I just floor it everywhere. It’s actually a really entertaining way to drive.

The NX, like you said, is right on the edge of being fast enough. That body with the t-tops is fairly heavy and I have to turn the a/c off to better merge into freeway traffic, but you’re right, it handles great and, like the Le Car, there’s something really fun about that car when you wring it out to the limit.

The one I drove had brown, like a metallic root beer color, and it made the car look sort of like a raccoon thanks to the trim around the headlights, and I just loved it.

Something to be said for the understated silver, too, of course.

The purchase became complete yesterday, so this is the “official” announcement. Friends and family got advance notice.

Everyone in California tints their windows. I’m not the biggest fan of it. And, actually this car came from Oregon, so I don’t know what they were doing. It might go away at some point, but it actually looks alright with the black paint.

That is the cemetery where Michael Jackson, among many other celebrities, is buried. It’s down the street from me and I like to take walks there. I visit all the old-time Hollywood graves. Humphrey Bogart, Clark Gable, Jean Harlow, Sammy Davis Jr. Most of them are in private areas, but I know how to sneak in. It’s also a good place to take pictures.

It looks pretty bad-ass. Over here it’s not allowed to have those frontdoor windows tinted. My F150 had it all over except for the windshield. Got fined for that once. The police wanted me to remove the stuff instantly but it wasn’t just some dark foil I could take of immediately. I invited them to do it. They failed. So I just let it be, never was pulled over again actually.

Looks pretty quite and peaceful. Great for shooting the C3o. And congrats on the buy. It won’t fail you. From having a smile on your face. You’ll miss the wrenching...

It seems like a trick to make me lose my keys. At least that’s what happens why I drive my father’s car.

It’s not quite as dark on the door window as it looks in that picture and, if you notice, it’s only on the passenger side. If it was on the driver’s side, it would definitely be illegal. I think. A light tint might be ok. The good stuff is impossible to get off. The cheap stuff starts bubbling after one summer. This tint is actually pretty decent and has held up. My last Le Car’s window’s looked like bad psychedelic art from the 1970’s.

It is very pretty. And most of the graves are from the 30’s-50’s, so they all have these old fashioned American names like Hattie and Millie and Jebediah. It’s fascinating. Thanks. It makes me smile whenever I look at it and I still have plenty of other cars to wrench on. I’ll sell the Nissan at some point, but the market isn’t exactly hot for NX’s and I really like that car for some dumb reason.

Kinja'd!!! Jobjoris > Jonee
12/01/2015 at 16:59

Kinja'd!!!1

Ah, now I see the driver’s side isn’t. Don’t get why the passenger’s side would be allowed, don’t you ever need to look through that or have eye-contact with other traffic through that?

It definitely wasn’t foil, more some sort of coating. The look on that cop’s face when his nails and tools couldn’t even make a start of peeling it off: Epic.

Jebediah. If I ever have a son... The Nissan won’t let you wrench a lot either, these are fairly bullet proof as well, right?

Kinja'd!!! Jonee > Jobjoris
12/03/2015 at 00:06

Kinja'd!!!1

I don’t know. Maybe whoever did it figured they’s always be in the slow lane, so no one would ever notice that the passenger side was tinted.

That does sound funny. It’s also funny that he wanted to do it right there on the spot. Even with the cheap stuff you need one of those heat guns to get it to come off easily without ripping it. Over here you’d get a ticket and then have to bring it in to a police station for them to inspect it and make sure you removed the stuff.

Jebediah Verbeeten has a nice ring to it. The Nissan is indestructible. I’m continually impressed with how well it’s held up over 23 years in Southern California. Everything works for the most part, the dash hasn’t cracked, it runs like a top. The suspension is tired. I could fix that if I feel ambitious.

Kinja'd!!! Jobjoris > Jonee
12/03/2015 at 04:31

Kinja'd!!!1

Over here you’ll have to remove it instantly and on the spot. But again: that was impossible and we were standing next to the highway. Never a good spot to go wrenching/tooling/removing stuff on/of a car. And I had the car for like two months, so two months earlier I took it to the registration office to have it checked for being road legal (some adjustments were necessary) which it, according to them, was. So there was another argument why I found this whole situation laughable. I lost of course (I got fined) but I never removed the tint. NEVER!

So now the C30 is in, the NX still stays? I get the appeal but that one was some sort of a daily to you, right?

I do know they were imported by D.K. International Corp in L.A. - and I suspect they imported a lot of them, I don’t think they’re particularly rare in reality, they just have an almost disgusting proclivity for falling into the clutches of hoarders (it looks weird, and it’s small, so there’s no escape usually) so they’re difficult to find.

Since every generation of Midget has shown up in the U.S. it’s probably a safe bet they imported them throughout the 1959-1972 production run.

Yeah, the NX was my DD. I will sell it, but that one with the small engine isn’t very desirable, so I’ll have to find some weirdo like me. But, it’s great cheap transportation and gets better gas mileage than the C30.

Oh, that’s right. I knew that because I have one of these amusing American brochures for it and it has their name on it. Since they were a little industrial vehicle there was also no reason to save them. Or take care of them. They’re always beaten up. I wonder if they were importing them that long. And, I wonder if there was a parts warehouse somewhere for them. I’d imagine there would have had to have been.

Kinja'd!!! Berang > Jonee

I’m fairly certain they imported them that long. The last major revision happened to the midget in 1965, so they were importing them from at least 1959-1965.

The last version, the “mp5” has the vent windows in the doors:

Kinja'd!!!

The mp4 is much the same, but lacking the vent windows.

Kinja'd!!!

The MP3 and earlier have a cloth roof and shorter bed, and the first version has a split rear window (and seems to be rarer in Japan than in the U.S.).

Quite interesting, but not worth much except to whoever is trying to sell one it seems.

The one with the small engine? We only had one engine, I think a 1.6 with about 90 hp. On thing that C30 won’t prove to be is economical with it’s gas mileage. I don’t even get 10kms on a liter gas!

1.6 with 110 horsepower, thank you very much. There was also the NX2000 with the 2.0 that was in the Sentra SE-R, and a beefed up suspension. That one’s an underrated little Japanese rocket. Relatively.

No, the C30 isn’t a gas sipper. That sounds about what I’m getting on average. It’s okay when I can cruise in 6th, but around town it’s dreadful. Especially because you said if it wasn’t loud enough, I wasn’t driving it right, so I keep trying to get it to make more and more noise.

Kinja'd!!! Jobjoris > Jonee
12/05/2015 at 11:04

Kinja'd!!!1

Wooha! 110hp! That’s almost 20% more than I’d expect! I’m sure the Euroland had less than 100hp, we’re talking about DIN, not SAE, right?

Not sure if we ever got that 2.0. The T5 is truly a great engine, just that fuel consumption. I could go flat out in the Z4 (which our V50 actually preceded): that thing would go barely under 10 kms to a liter. And when cruising highways you’d even get 12 kms. The V50, with the same amount of power though a bit heavier, never get near 10kms. No matter what I do.

Kinja'd!!! Jonee > Jobjoris
12/06/2015 at 16:32

Kinja'd!!!1

Since this is America, I assume SAE. 110 HP SAE might equal 90 DIN, right?

They used to say that the 5 cyl. had the power of a 6, but the mileage of a 4, but it never worked out that way. In the older ones it was the opposite. It is a little crazy that the Z would be that much better. I don’t mind the mileage so much. Could be worse. It’s better than any of my old Pacers, at least.

We only got the V50 in certain markets, strangely. California was one of them, but you couldn’t buy that wagon in every state. And, I don’t think they imported any with a manual, but that’s not too surprising.

I’m not sure if the difference is that big. The SAE/DIN difference was huge in the past (for SAE not taking all kinds of accessories into account) but nowadays it’s just the difference between a comparable amount of lbs/kgs that makes it different. SAE net hp is a little more than DIN hp - 1.0142 to be exact. As an example, this means that an European car with 200 DIN hp has 197 SAE hp. I think.

I had to get the T5, that was the only one with a 6-speed manuèl!

Interesting. I had no idea what the math was. They may have improved that motor and the earlier ones had 90hp before they came to America. Or, maybe you guys got a different engine. Isn’t it the NX1000, or something? This is an NX1600.

That’s a fun wagon, I bet. I know there’s a Polestar wagon here, but I’m not even sure that’s got a stick. Or, maybe it did and doesn’t any more. I like that 6-speed. Some folks were calling it sloppy, but it isn’t really. It’s just not a sports car shifter.

Nope, over here we always first got the number, then the character(s). So it was 180SX. Or 300ZX. Or, in your case, the 100NX. And as NX was easily mistaken for “Niks” the jokes were everywhere. “Niks” means “nothing”.

The 6-speed is nice but not on par with the German 6-speeds I’ve had the pleasure driving with. My V40 had a 6-speed as well: Huge improvement when it comes to it’s “feeling”.

All our other Nissans were like that. 280ZX, 300ZX, 200SX. They just went the other way with the NX. But, I think actually it was just called “NX” with no numbers except for the sporty one which was the NX2000 because it was the 90’s and everything cool and futuristic had “2000” added to it.

It’s no BMW 6-speed, no. But, there’s nothing wrong with it. I recently drove one of those Nissan Jukes with a 6-speed and that was relatively terrible. 6th gear was, like, hidden in some nether region. Kind of a fun car, though, in a bouncy, sloppy kind of way.

Ah, you Americans and numbers... Like the Audi 5000. And you probably had an Audi 2000 as well.

Worst transmission I ever experienced wasn’t even eastern European. My brother bought some white ex-Avis Opel Corsa’s for trading. And I ended up using one for a short while. It was some sort of game quiz shifting: Just make some circles with the lever and after two completed circles direct the lever in the direction it normally should go to. 8 out of 10 you ended up right. 2 out of 10 you ended up badly (3 instead of 5, you catch my drift). No feel whatsoever.

Haha. That sounds hilarious. I’ve had cars with similar transmissions. I had one of these Subarus once and it was like stirring pudding. And the shifter was this weird joystick shaped thing, so it was like playing a video game that was broken. Otherwise, a fun car, though.

Yeah, it was a little beat up, but I loved that car. The interior was awesome. So, 80’s. And the 6 cylinder made it really fun.

Six-cylinder? We had that one only with a 4-banger Turbo! It took Subaru’s SVX to get us our first Subaru 6. That’s such a great tourer.

It always amazed me the maximum of cylinders coming from the US in fact was that V8. I know there were some V10’s and a few V16’s but those are truly exceptions. I’d expect at least an attempt to get a decent limo with a V12 to beat the British and German!

I’m with you. Good deal.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I guess there are times when my countrymen do show a little restraint. 8 has always been enough. During the golden age of the SUV you could get a Ford Excursion with a V10, but I don’t think it sold too well. They really should have put that motor in a big Lincoln sedan. That would have been hilarious. I guess it’s just not worth all the money it would take to develop a 12 cylinder. When I worked at a car museum near Boston, they had an old V16 Cadillac. It was incredible to see. I can’t remember how it got gas and oil to all those cylinders, but I do think those engines were problematic.

Dodge had a V10 for years as well in their pickups, right? That’s where the Viper got it’s engine from. Developing a V12 for companies already experienced in either 6-in-lines or V6’s shouldn’t be that complicated? Especially with the fuel consumption you’re already used to ;-)

YOU WORKED AT A CAR MUSEUM? AWESOME! TELL MORE!

Yeah, those trucks had that 10 cylinder. I guess they were just lazy then. Imagine all the gargantuan motors we missed out on. I’m surprised Hummer didn’t come out with a V12 for the hell of it.

It was an interesting museum. It started as a carriage house on a huge estate. When cars came out, the family bought a new one every year starting in like 1898 until the 30’s. And, they kept all the cars. So, they ended up with this collection that represented the history of the automobile. They also had rotating exhibits. It looks snazzier now.

I’m surprised Ford didn’t do anything with a V12. Yeah, they did somehow for Aston Martin but they owned Jaguar for a while as well, Jaguar had awesome (and reliable haha) V12’s for decades!

Looks great. And what was your “position” in the museum?

That’s true. I wonder if they could have stuffed a Jag V12 in a Mustang. That would have been hilarious. Ah, someone did it.

http://jalopnik.com/5819712/your-c…

That would have made a perfect Cobra Super Snake, or whatever.

I was an assistant curator. Which meant I worked the gift shop and made phone calls to work out car shipping logistics. It was fun. They also rented the place out for parties and weddings and such, so I helped with that.
