Home this week - the job is on hiatus. So I’m doing laundry and watching the odd Fifth Gear that I missed. In this clip, Tiff talks about McLaren tuning the sound of the car so it sounds better with the lid off. My question: shouldn’t a car just sound like it sounds? Should there be, as in some models, sound coming out of the audio system to ‘improve’ the sound the car makes?

But you can’t tuna fish.
Thanks. I'll be here all week. Try the veal.

I went on a tour of Ricardo Shoreham Technical Centre when I was looking to join their graduate scheme. When I was there we looked at what they do for clients and the process of how they respond to the clients requirements.
They also build all the Mclaren road car engines there so I guess they probably did that too.

Sorry - doing the laundry - she’ll punch me in the shoulder otherwise. Give me a few.

Should have offered a prize for the first person to drop this in the comments ...

So you’re suggesting straight pipes for every car? Isn’t every car’s exhaust used to tune its engine sound? There are some that use the exhaust system to make it quiet and some to make them sound billowy and fill the air but they’re all characteristics of the length of the exhaust components and the extra resonators, cats and mufflers.

I’m talking about modifications solely aimed at sound, especially when they pipe sounds into the car.

Ah gotcha. Not sure if this is true but I remember hearing somewhere that some cars like the f10 M5 pipe in the correct engine sound as if there weren’t any sound deadening in the car. In that case it might be alright since that is how it sounds? But yeah I agree on not adding sounds for the sake of sounds like the Renault Megane that allows one to select different engine layout sounds to be pumped into the cabin

Indeed. Don’t spend money on that sort of ‘tuning’ - spend money stiffening the chassis or something else that adds to the driving experience. Don’t fake it. At least that’s my position, never having driven a car with added sound.

Hahaha. Ok.

I think there’s a very clear distinction between tuning the exhaust to produce a certain sound, and using a computer to artificially play a sound through the speakers.
Piping in legit engine noise is more of a grey area. But fake noise is not.

Yes but what if the sound that is being piped in is an accurate representation of the sound we were to hear if the car were not sound deadened? I’m not that big a fan of it but in my opinion there needs to be a distinction between that and the run of the mill artificial sound from a completely different engine layout being played over a car’s sound system for the sake of sound.

If you’ve got an artificial recording of the sound the engine is actually making, what are you doing? Just use the real engine sound.
I agree.
But I think there is a place for artificial sound. It might be fun on something like a hatchback. You expect better on a supercar or sports car - they shouldn’t be faking it. But as a party trick to spruce up a regular car...maybe that’s okay.
I’m not sure who’d actually use it though. But you could say that about half the features these days.
