Kinja'd!!!

Cyber Monday pushed me over the edge. There’s an Xbox One and Forza 6 on its way now, got a pretty good deal on both. I didn’t opt for the special edition 1TB console though, I figure the standard 500 GB console is enough since I don’t play a ton of other games, and most likely won’t download movies or music on it (never have on my 360). yaaaay

I got the special edition one a few weeks ago and I love it. About halfway through the career mode right now.

MS’ insistence on function with minimal HD space for arcade use with the 360 meant that you could poke along forever on a 20gig. That’s... not the case anymore. Now, everything installs. Everything. Even if you’re only sampling friends’ games and downloading free Live Gold games, it fills up in a hurry. I had to get an external 500Gb, and in the process of configuring that, the “games” tab of the “my games and apps” seems to have forgotten that I have any games, so now I have to go look any of the ones on disc up to launch them. SIGH

While having the extra storage will be needed, you can just use an external drive once you fill the internal drive.

And you will fill it. All those 360 games you want to play in the Xbone will need to be installed before they will work. Forza is over 40GB plus any DLC you get.

Storage space fills up FAST. Even if you don’t play many games. I filled 500GB pretty quickly, without very much. I’ll be ordering the Seagate 5TB external drive when I get home tonight; cyber Monday pricing of $115. There are also a few 2TB drives for around $65.

“All those 360 games”

The only games I ever played on 360 was Forza 4, Horizon (occasionally) and GTAV (which I haven’t decided if I’m going to pay up for AGAIN for XBone since I doubt they’ll do backwards compatibility for...)

So maybe down the road I’ll need an external, but for the immediate future I don’t forsee it.

I figure it fills up fast if you play a lot of games and download movies and such, but I don’t, haha

Maybe I’m wrong, but I’m thinking/hoping that 500 GB should be sustainable for a while since I’ll mostly just be playing Forza 6 / Horizon 2 once I eventually pick that up, and maybe a couple others (I’m not big on most games, even major stuff like Fallout etc. Halo is about as far away from a racing game as I go)

That's about what I have. Around 4, maybe 5, games on the console plus FH2 DLCs. Although I could probably due with clearing out some space. It'll likely be enough for awhile, but in time you will likely need to invest in a second hard drive.

huh, that sounds weird.

A few others have pointed out how quickly the 500 GB fills up, and maybe it does, but my initial thinking is that I really only use my Xbox for racing games, YouTube, and Netflix. I don’t generally pick up a whole lot of games, not even major titles.

I managed to use basically just the 4GB of storage on my base level arcade 360 for quite a while until I bought GTA V, and then I bought a USB stick (16GB I think) and still have over half of that empty. So my storage usage is generally pretty minimal, or at least less than average, probably.

Yeah, you definitely might be right. If that’s the case then I’ll pick one up, but for right now I’m thinking I should be ok. Hopefully in the mean time, prices for external hard drives will drop a little bit too lol

There always tend to be some decent sales on them somewhere. Newegg and Amazon are your best bets, but even stores like Staples and Fry's Electronics can prove to have good deals.

There’s a reason, and that is the untold complication of BluRay systems. Due to how the drive accesses data, it’s not able to obtain as high rates of data transfer when that data is distributed across the disc instead of all in one block. Some PS4 games cheated this by having the data in many, many different places on the disc for common things, near where the more specific data it was using was. It’s little known, but in the previous generation, the 360 (which was great at compression and decompression) was able to get solidly better average data transfer rates by pulling freely from a DVD in compressed form, and decompressing. With higher def games, the limitations of BluRay if running completely off disc would raise load times from appalling to apocalyptic. Hence, every game installs to disc in the tens of gigs, basically. DRASTICALLY different than previous gen.

Yeah, I saw that the Forza 6 install size was something like 45 GB, which is pretty intense. There’s no way that they could get away with doing a 4GB console like they used to, so I definitely understand why the 500GB is the bare minimum amount of storage available.

Nice, what’re your thoughts on credits/winnings and car prices? I heard it was a shitfest in FM5, is it improved in 6?

On the other hand, with everything installing, having an SSD would make for crazy-quick load times once installed. That’s not what I got for an external, but if you find yourself needing one down the line, it’s something to consider.

This is my first Xbox/Forza experience so I don’t have any context, but things seem reasonable to me. I did win a million credits on my first prize spin, though, so my experience may be a little skewed.

Basically, I’ve been able to use cars that I win for the career mode races about 80% of the time so I haven’t had to spend much.

What did the console set you back? I keep waiting to pull the trigger but last time I checked it was $300 for the 500Gb unit.

That's what I paid, but I found a deal where it came with 3 free months of gold, which seemed decent.
