If you hit a deer or another animal, or you see one get hit, and it doesn’t die immediately, but it obviously can’t survive, is it legal to shoot the poor thing? I’m sure it’s different for pets than for wild animals, but just a thought. I know that it’s illegal to shoot a deer outside of an actual hunting area, and further illegal to just fire a gun in the middle of the road, but it seems like there’s got to be an exception for something like this.

For the record, I don’t own a gun and I’ve never hit an animal. (Except for two frogs and a snake, all of which I’m sure died instantly) I’m just curious.

I assume that would be a trigger pull for the police department, not you. If it’s sticking around in pain on the road you could call the PD and they probably would take care of it (or send animal control).

I wonder how the hunting rules affect use of other weapons than guns/bows. I can’t imagine cutting the throat or clubbing or breaking the neck would be banned per se - there’s not a Neolithic hunting craze or anything. There just might be a more general ban on killing a deer, which, well, would already be done in the case of a car impact. If charged, no jury would convict you.

I think that depends on the state and area. I would guess that in most places you would be required to call the police to take care of something like that. In more rural areas you might be allowed to do that youself/could get away with doing it yourself.

Yep. In high school I was in a friends car that got hit by a deer (it literally ran right into the front quarter panel just behind the wheel). A cop came out and had his pistol drawn on the deer ready to put it down when it somehow got up and ran off into the woods. Must have just rung its bell.

BTW, Go Hawkeyes!

If I’m up north where it’s wooded, I’ll shoot the deer without question. No point in making it suffer. If I’m near a city or residential area I would call the police dept and ask for permission. I’d be willing to bet it would take a while for police to show up to something that is minor for them.

Man, it’s going to be a hard fought battle!

GO GREEN

Winner goes to the playoff and has to keep the National Championship trophy in the B1G for another year. If it’s back to back B1G winners, we might finally stop hearing about the god damn SEC so much.

My dad once hit a deer with a sherrif’s deputy right behind him.

He had slowed down to about 10mph at the point of impact, so all that happened was it broke all of the deer’s legs. It crawled past the truck and out into the farmer’s field to the left of the truck.

The deputy saw what happened, and after making sure my dad was okay he put the animal out of its misery.

By that, I mean he unloaded his service weapon at it from the road and didn’t even hit it, then went back to the squad car and got the shotgun and finally hit it with the second shot of that.

Then the deputy asked my dad if he wanted the deer. My dad replied that it was Swiss cheese now and drove off.

I almost had to find that out.

I hit a deer in rural Wisconsin at 5am, while doing 60mph. I found it in the ditch, trying to run but it was so messed up it couldn’t move. If I had bothered calling the cops, it would’ve taken 15 minutes or more for them to show up. So after calling work to let them know I wouldn’t be in today, I grabbed the tire iron and went to finish things. In that 3-4 minute window of time, the deer had already passed away.

Agreed. I know most are picking Sparty based on their tougher schedule, but Iowa/MSU games are always tough and Ferentz really doesn’t like Dantonio.

Should be a good one.

This. Call 911 and tell them what happened and that the deer is hurt. Tell them you are able and willing to put it down and then they will let you know to do it or not.

Why doesn’t he like Dantonio?

It’s two really tough hard nosed teams, it’s going to be a hard game for either team. Iowa’s schedule might not be the toughest, but anyone who’s won 12 games in a row has something working right and shouldn’t be taken lightly.

I’m not entirely sure, but I think there might be some bad blood somewhere related to recruiting. Just things I’ve heard in passing.

What is it with deer running -into- cars? I've had the same thing happen, in the same part of the car. It's like they just panic and are not...smart.

Interesting.

I know at one point we had a split family. We had one brother, Iowa had the other.

Maybe they had a major recruiting battle.

I heard on ESPN once that the mom wore the shirt/jersey for whichever team was the home team lol

Yeah, Micah Hyde (Iowa, now with the Packers) and Marcus Hyde (MSU). Micah did this that day:

I would assume this is the type of thing that is “technically illegal” in most US jurisdictions. I’d call the local PD or animal control first. In the city/suburbs, no way am I going to just start firing a gun in a situation like this, even though the intentions are good. Out in a rural area, maybe a different story, but I’d probably still contact the authorities first. I don’t want to see an animal suffer needlessly, but I dont want to go to jail either.
