Here’s something you don’t see every day. In fact, you may never see this scenario again. (Apologies for potato pics.) This picture is somewhat perspective’d, but not as much as you’d think: wheelbases are 131” and 88”.

Kinja'd!!!

This picture, in depicting the two cars as about the same length, is nothing but lies. LIES. Below is worse:

Kinja'd!!!

Summary: for those of you who aren’t aware, I bought Jarod Rose’s giant ‘59 Lincoln Capri about a month ago. This picture is from the weekend, when it was hauled up from a lower parking spot (where I disassembled the ham-sized stuck front brakes and did a rust inventory), and slid it for the moment into my wall tent nearer the shop. The haul vehicle is my cousin’s ‘64 Land Rover “Busted”, which I helped him rebuild. Low range 4wd, baby.

This is in the running for the most Jalop picture ever. Just needs a wagon and a miata.

Wait until I do the sarcastic comparison I have planned between the Capri and an ‘84 or ‘85 Renault Alliance a friend has. With a Landie in the background and possibly a ‘67 4WD International Loadstar because reasons.

I haven’t even seen it yet, but that Loadstar is making me hard.

Points I will be touching on:

Both 4-door sedans

Both unibody

Both have forward-hinging hoods (!)

Both have trailing arm rear, A-arm front: the Lincoln has coils all around and UEL front, and the Renault has struts and torsion

Both have the same color interior (Important!)

Very similar turns lock to lock

Assembled only about 200 miles from one another (the Renault was a CKD in Kenosha, WI)

Oh yeah, and one almost fits within the WHEELBASE of the other.

These are very important facts to include in a comparison.

The Rover is noticeably unstanced. The Lincoln would have less wheel visible if the skirt were in place on that side, but it isn’t. Also, longcar is looooooong.

The Rover is pleasingly stanced imo.

One detail I didn’t include, it was an Air Force truck. Got the data plate inside. I need to get a correct repaint on that shit as well.

I think the ‘70s Loadstar on the property would be a better candidate for slamming, being 2WD.

I’m going to have to make rocker panel replacements. So rust. Many structure. Wow.
I can do it, though - giant box brake and punch at work, easy access to bonderized 16GA sheet steel, simple folds needed.

Nice.

I’m glad you’re able to make the body panels yourself because it’s a rare bird.

Not even on Dearborn Classics.

Unibody car, subframe rails so far apart that most two-post lifts couldn’t even reach them, rockers collapsed beyond point of usefulness for lifting, rockers made out of deranged 5-piece metal sandwich, low-production car with no aftermarket repair...

Normal person: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA (crashes through door) AAAAAA

RamblinRover person: Hmm, yes, quite (strokes chin)

This is a cross-section of the floor, inner rocker, rocker brace, outer rocker, outer rocker cover, and rocker bottom. Yes. They did this. Up front, the outer rocker cover is replaced by/welded to the outer fender skin, because the fenders do not come off this car, and Lincoln had just refilled their prescription for bennies. Oh, and some of them have a rock guard attached to this, and there’s an aluminum tread cover on top. Also, there are braces in the first and second boxes where the middle door post goes.

I say you skip the sheet metal and just get a solid block of aluminum....

Kinja'd!!!0

If my calcumatations are correct, a solid block of aluminum each side would *only* be like 500-600lb per. *Probably* a bit much, but not as full-bore insane as I expected. Of the pieces I listed, the floor and inner rocker are rotted at their join, the rocker bottom (which I will call “Dave”) is not here, man, and the brace, outer rocker, and outer rocker cover all go about halfway down before descending into arglefarblegumble. I’m going to try to yank off the outer rocker cover and the brace to make new, make a big angle to fix the floor join, splice the lower outer rocker, and make a new bottom.

I like the rack that the Lincoln has going on right now. So I imagine the Capri will be going into hypernation a for now while the Falcon gets worked on?

Kinja'd!!! RamblinRover Luxury-Yacht > JR1

Kinja'd!!!0

It depends. Funds are pinchy, and I need not to have more than one bay tied up at a time, which means the big rocker replacement will have to wait until I either have all the pieces lined up or the Ranchero scooted briefly aside. For that, the Ranchero needs some expense in either making the Rantrailer to move it on or for me to get the front suspension done and some wheels, either of which are moniez. In the mean time, there are several things I can work on in the tent. For example, spark plugs out. Also, measuring for my repair pieces, pulling the inner fender covers (front), and probably removing the door cards to get the glass out, so I can measure it and quote it (see if the local glass shop can beat the prices I’ve seen).

Meanwhile, it looks like I’ve found a source for the seat fabric. Now I need to source carpet for the lower door cards and suitcase lining for the trunk.

When you say “rack”, you mean how it’s tilted? I think (a) the tires aren’t matched all the way around, and (b) the front left was low, and the car leans according to the much stiffer front suspension. Anyway, I can now say I’ve “driven” it under tow, though most of the moving was in reverse. It glides.

That diagram above is a jumbled mess.

I still recommend the solid block option.

Doubling up on 6”x 4” rectangular tubing with 1/2” wall (similar to what it would take “in real life”), it would weigh only 300+lb total (very doable!) but would cost about two thousand dollars. Aluminum be mad expensive, yo.

1/8” wall steel would be lighter than 1/2” aluminum, slightly, and would probably get the job done. Kind of ghastly, though it would be kind of funny

I figured it was the tires mismatched but it looks better than I thought it would for a land yacht.

And I am glad it glides. I was a little worried the suspension might need a lot of work

Oh, it definitely needs new shocks, don’t get me wrong. I just don’t think the springs are quite dead. The bushings I feel I will replace on an as-needed basis as they fail (not really dead yet, probably), though I did manage to twist the front sway bar mount a bit loading it, so that part will get redone a little. I don’t think the ball joints (over-packed in luscious grease these past 56 years) have given up the ghost.

I have the ability to get over 4’ of lever arm on the plugs, with a good tight six-point deep-well impact socket. And an oxyacetylene torch with a heating tip. They *will* come out, mark my words.

Also, the tires that are on it for moving around are various 14” scrap tires mostly meant for cars from the 80s. None of them are a tall bias profile, which means the “right” tires on it will make it taller, if not by that much. Probably something like this, in a 1” 800 to 850(!)-14. Huge load rating, 1600lb-ish, and a pretty tall tire - 27”+.
