Now that the Genesis Sedan is being moved, the Azera is very likely to survive on as Hyundai’s flagship sedan. I wonder though whether the Aslan will end up replacing the Azera once the luxury brand gets going. It is a bit bigger than the Azera, more upmarket, and has only been out since last year. I have a feeling that this thing will be in the US by 2017, especially since it seems right in line with the updated Buick Lacrosse.

And the rear
I will say that it is very obvious the car was built cheaper than the market it was aiming for. I think a refresh focusing on build and materials would get it to the level it needs to be for North America and most of all, South Korea. I’m surprised they even attempted to sell this one in their home market since usually the South Korean versions of their vehicles are actually better than or equal to the North American versions.
Also, when the hell are we going to get the V8 Genesis Sedan with the optional AWD? Canada gets it! Then again, it would be just under $60k in the US and a complete no-brainer buy when compared to the current Equus and K900.

Hyundai does not need an upmarket brand. Just make a really nice Sonata trim level and leave the rest to the Genesis line.

The Aslan would make a really nice entry-level car for the Genesis brand. We don’t even get the Azera in Canada, non luxury fullsizers just do not sell anymore.

The Sonata can’t take on Avalon or Impala, let alone LaCrosse or Lexus ES. They are just too large in the North American market to let that share go.

It’s too large to be an entry level luxury car. Kind of the way the Lexus ES is outside the IS-GS-LS scheme, and seen more as a top Avalon. Plus Genesis will have a G70 compact sedan out before the decade is over and that will likely start at $30K and end up cheaper than the Aslan.

Too many sedans close together. A top end Sonata is $33k, a mid-trim Azera is $35k, the Genesis Sedan starts at 38k, so the Aslan would be around $36k. Then you have the Genesis compact sedan which would be in that $30 to $35k range. Too many sedans.

When was the last time you saw an Azera (or LaCrosse or Avalon for that matter)? I literally have never seen an Azera on the road ever in my life.

All large sedans are pretty rare, even as rentals out here. I also don’t see S-classes, 7-series, Equus, Q70s, or RLXs of any generation. I also live in a state where each car purchase averages $25,000 for households, and 20k annual miles is normal.

Supposedly, Hyundai’s head office has been insisting that the Aslan come to the US, but Hyundai Motor America has insisted that they don’t need it; as the Azera barely sells as it is and full-size cars are a dying market.
I could see them keeping a FWD entry full-size model under the Hyundai brand to continue going up against the Impala and Avalon. Whether they keep both the Azera and Aslan or just go with one of the two is what remains to be seen.

It’s funny we get the V8 AWD Genesis but we don’t get the Azera. We do get it’s cousin the Cadenza tho.
