I was talking with my sister in law about why I drive a manual and how much I enjoy driving when she said cars and driving is just a way to get to her destination. My response: “maybe that’s because the only cars you’ve had are a Dodge Caliber and a Prius.”

Oops. She didn’t get too mad.

I’ve always wondered about this... like if people who look at driving as just a chore and a car as just an appliance... if they had the opportunity to take out a really engaging car on a spirited drive, I wonder how many of them would change their perception?

Why not have fun on your way to said destination? Better than just sitting there disengaged.

I don’t necessarily disagree with her stance. I enjoy driving but 90% of the time, I’m driving for some unavoidable task and not for pleasure. I enjoy my pickup, but that’s because I value utility, not necessarily that I find pickups fun (although it has to be stick to be interesting).

Basically, I do love driving and a good manual, but my vehicle choices will always be constrained by other factors: Garage size, family plans, budget, reliability, practicality, etc.

In my everyday drive to work, it wouldn’t matter if I had a RS6 or 458 GT3 spec racecar, I will hate the drive so much. If it was clear of traffic, I would have the biggest smile ever in any econobox!

Fuck smartphones, nobody needs them. Phones are just used as a communication tool.

See how dumb that sounds?

I’m not saying driving one on the road wouldn’t be fun, but being stuck in a traffic jam on the highway in the summer wearing a racing suit with the engine overheating.....
