Hello all! Today I’m going to ask a fun question to thy Opponauts. That question is which car would you buy? I’m going to make you choose between two small compact hatchbacks revered by critics and loved by owners.
1: 2016 Volkswagen Golf Sportwagen SEL (6AT)
You can choose between the TSI or TDI engines, colors, or any option you want. All that is required is that you stay with the SEL trim level.
2. 2015 Mazda 3 sGrand Touring (6AT)
With the Mazda 3, you have much less options between powertrains, because you have only one engine: the 2.5 liter Skyactiv engine mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. I have given you the choices, now you can answer!

The Mazda looks amazing, but I’d have to go with a TDI Golf sportwagen.
![]() 11/28/2015 at 13:40 |

Brown Golf TDI because screw the haters.
![]() 11/28/2015 at 13:41 |
|
Golf because it has more room, TDI for fuel mileage.
![]() 11/28/2015 at 13:43 |
|
Uhhh TDI Golf Sportwagen because yaaaas.
![]() 11/28/2015 at 13:45 |

Mazda because it’s not a VW.
Er, wait...I own a bunch of VW stock. Buy the VW because it’s a wonderfully engineered German driving machine.
![]() 11/28/2015 at 13:48 |

The VW because save the long-roofs
![]() 11/28/2015 at 13:55 |

Mazda because hatchback and not a wagon. If it were a plain Golf the answer might be different but probably not because I’d prefer not to have an engine with a self-destructing cam. Plus the Mazda looks great.
![]() 11/28/2015 at 13:55 |
|
I’ll buck the trend and say Mazda. Because German Engineering™ scares me.

I would go Tungsten silver Mk7 TSI GSW. TSI, even though SEL is auto only with that model. That’s because the tuning options available for the 1.8T are absolutely ridculous, and the engine is amazing. Plus Tungsten Silver is the most beautiful earth tone ever put on a car.
![]() 11/28/2015 at 14:01 |

Ah yes, Tungsten is my favorite color on the MK7 GSW. And tuning is insane for the 1.8T, and its not that expensive either.
![]() 11/28/2015 at 14:06 |

Golf Variant TSi no doubt.

I’ve driven the new Mazda 3 with the 2.5, it was delightful. Would spend my monies on one.

Apart from the words about silver, I agree entirely.
![]() 11/28/2015 at 14:32 |

Even the 87 Octane tune on those gets you like 220hp and 250-260tq.
![]() 11/28/2015 at 14:36 |

Tungsten silver is not silver silver. That’s Reflex silver. Tungsten is like a brownish gold.

We don’t get the SEL spec in the U.K. so I’ll go with the SE with the 1.4TSi 125ps 6 speed manual in Pacific blue metallic with 17” Madrids and Shetland ‘Vienna’ leather interior.
![]() 11/28/2015 at 14:39 |
|
I prefer the blue they offer instead.
![]() 11/28/2015 at 14:42 |
|
Nice! I really like that blue on beige interior color combo! Isn’t the 1.4 the biggest gasoline engine you can get in the UK?
![]() 11/28/2015 at 14:43 |
|
Clearly the Mazda. Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against VW - actually, I have one (okay, it’s a SEAT, but that’s the same), I just think the Jap beats the Fritz in every possible way.
![]() 11/28/2015 at 14:59 |

The largest and indeed the only engine you can get is the 1.4TSi in regular and BlueMotion with the exception being the Golf Estate R which has a 2.0TSi 300ps 4Motion 6 speed DSG (DSG only) while the larger Passat has no petrol options at all.
If you want something Golf Estate like with manual and petrol options, go for the Skoda Octavia as you have the option for the 1.2TSi in the base model, 1.4TSi in the midrange and 2.0TSi 230ps for the Octavia vRS.
Om nom nom.

Mazda hands down. I learned to drive stick on a super fun Protege5 and my first adult car was a Mazdaspeed3. Huge fan of Mazda and their dedication to the fun factor.
![]() 11/28/2015 at 15:12 |

I actually like VWs, but for driving pleasure and parts price I'd probably choose Mazda.
![]() 11/28/2015 at 15:57 |

Mazda3, because it’s the shorter version of my 2016 CX-5 Grand Touring (but I like the CX-5 better).
![]() 11/28/2015 at 16:11 |

Definitely the Golf. More practical, better powertrains, and nicer interior. I know you said you like the 3 better though.
Also, you missed today’s configurator-off! We did the Cayman and Boxster!
![]() 11/28/2015 at 16:25 |

Golf Sportwagen because BIG WINDOWS.
![]() 11/28/2015 at 18:43 |
|
Mmmmm... Golf R Wagon. I may have to move to Europe just to get one.
![]() 11/28/2015 at 18:44 |
|
I like the light blue almost as much as the Tungsten.
![]() 11/28/2015 at 18:47 |

Ah, darn! I wasn’t in a place where I could send messages, but I did manage to get the app open to attempt to send: which is where the read receipts came from. I’m building a Mustang though!
I said I like the 3 better than the Golf hatch . The wagon is a whole different story.

SEAT. VW. Potato, Potahto.
![]() 11/28/2015 at 18:50 |

I like the 3 more than the CX-5, but don’t get me wrong I really like the CX-5.

I too buy my automobiles based on window size.
![]() 11/28/2015 at 19:04 |

I’d rather have the Octavia vRS myself and enjoy some nice holidays with the change.
The Golf R estate is £33,585, while the Octavia vRS estate is £27,550.
I don’t do holidays but I’d imagine £6,030 would get me some nice holidays plus the Octy is available with a manual gearbox and in mo opinion, much better looking.
![]() 11/28/2015 at 19:26 |

I’m not a fan of the Octavia, I would rather have the Golf R Wagon. However, if I was strapped for cash, I would buy the SEAT Leon Cupra ST.

I love the dark blue. Great color.
![]() 11/28/2015 at 20:04 |

Mazda.
![]() 11/28/2015 at 20:30 |

Sounds good. Life would be boring if we all liked the same thing.
The SEAT Leon Cupra ST is quite a good looking car. Handles well and quite faster.
![]() 11/28/2015 at 21:09 |

That's a great color too, I have yet to see a dark blue one in the wild.
![]() 11/28/2015 at 22:05 |

True. I think the GTI is better than both though, but I'd love a GTI or R wagon in America.
