That’s a beauty. Was it as clean as it looks in the pic?
Always loved those cars...

I have read about how rock solid der panzerwagen is. I’ve always wanted an SL.
Any opponaught have personal experience with them? How hard is maintenance for electrics, finding parts, etc? Is this dream more reasonable than an XJ-S?

R107 specifically, or just an SL? There is an oppo who has 2 R107 SL cars. Theyre both a little rough around the edges, but they werent kept super well before he got them.
R107s (like all SL cars) dont hold their value super well over the years, so dont be surprised when you see people trying to get as much as they can out a sale. Ive seen them go for $5000 for rough around the edges, but well kept to over $20k from an elderly couple that only knows what they want for it.
$5k-10k is what I would say a decent condition one is worth. Obviously the 560SL is a bit of a different story, but even that, my R129 didnt cost me an arm and a leg, and I have the “not for shy buyers” SL600 Sport. An R107 should have a very comprehensive maintenance record right around 100k miles. Upholstery may be pretty rough along with the soft top if its an outdoor car. If you want something different, I would recommend looking for an SLC, Ive only seen one or two in person myself.
Theyre nice cars though, regardless of what generation you get. It’s an SL class.

The R107 tickles my knickers the most. I’ve love to find a 5spd manual 380SL with a hardtop.

Removeable hardtop, or SLC?
380s are pretty common (at least around me) and not expensive at all from what Ive seen. What I would say is try to find one for sale with the hard top if you want a convertible. The hardtops separately go for a lot of cash by themselves. Also, I would strongly advise against buying one from a “foreign car mechanic.” They can be wizards as far as getting the cars running again, but I have more horror than success stories about them.

Either. I’ve seen more convertibles with hard tops around me. I’ve seen some of the old rally builds that people have done for the R107 and I think it would be awesome to do an inspired build of one.

Its all about those squared headlights and riveted fender flares.
You certainly have my blessings.
Where are you located. I’d gladly offer help if I were close enough to.

Dallas. Checking the local craigslist I do see a few listed. Fairly common car and the old and affluent have them laying around or some collector has snapped them up and parked them.
My main concern is the (now) ancient electrical systems and their availibility.

Benzworld forums will be your best tool when it comes to both parts and help. Im up outside NYC, so unfortunately Im stuck, but if you need help finding anything, let me know and I certainly have friends that can also help the search with wholesalers and parts depots.
