My 6 states on its little info screen that my average miles per gallon figure is 25.6. However, doing the math and using !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , I’ve found that it is actually 27.5. Anyone else’s cars underestimate themselves? I’ve seen some people online complaining about the 6’s fuel economy and stating it doesn’t match the ratings. I’m wondering if they’re all relying on the car’s readout and not doing the math themselves. I always figured the car’s calculations would be higher, not lower.
Pic for your time.

I have a base-model ‘09 Accent with no power anything, no A/C, no cruise and a manual transmission, so no fancy little fuel-guessing MPG computer in my car, but I also use Fuelly to keep track of my savings as well! :)
EPA estimates for it are like 6.8L/100km (34.5mpg), but I’ve had that as low 6.0L/100km (39.2mpg) on one tank before with my highest fuel economies being around 6.0, 6.1, 6.2, 6.3L/100km-ish. Lately it’s been more like 6.5-6.7L/100km though because of short trips and a perpetually-emptying, slow leak left-front tire that I don’t always have time to pump back up to recommended pressure every day.
I have my heavy winter tires/steelies on now rather than my summer tires/alloys, so I’ll have no slow leaks to worry about now (so at least my tire pressures won’t fluctuate), but my fuel mileage will tank when the cold weather gets here...

Never had a car that calculated my MPGs, I’ve always thought of it as a way to do long division once a week for shits and giggles.
“307 miles... 13.45 gallons... Round down miles and round up gallons for ease... 13.5 goes into 30 twice... 300 minus 270 is 30... 300 goes into 300 once exactly... remainder seven from earlier, plus .05 extra gallons from earlier.... so a little over 21 mpgs? Ah fuck it I’ll use Fuelly.”

Don’t reset your readout until after you hit a constant rate of speed. The acceleration right out of the gas station fools the vehicle into remembering the moment you got 5 miles per gallon accelerating. Since you haven’t even driven a mile yet, that 1/4 mile was 25% of your driving, thus that low number is always averaged against. However, if you set it once you are getting a normal economy at speed, by the time you start doing accelerations, there is enough data for a more accurate display. This is why every review will tell you they got below the EPA average (unless the highway economy was extremely high for a very long distance).

My trip computer runs 1-1.5mpg optimistically.

Ever since I had a tune put on it my car overestimates by 5-9 mpg. It’s less fun in that direction.

It depends on the car. My Focus ST overestimates a bit except when fully warmed up (if it is the entire time, it’s dead on). My girlfriend’s Mazda3 has a similar situation, except it is always underestimating to some extent. My Lincoln LS is so dead on every time that it’s kind of disturbing (within 0.2mpg every time), which can be entirely chalked up to the angle of the car and the pump.
We reset ours at every fill up.
