If you are a sci-fi fan, you’re probably familiar with the seminal series firefly. For those of you who are not please after reading this article go out and watch it it’s on Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, l pretty much everywhere available on the Internet as far as I can tell. A brief synopsis for those of you who are unfamiliar; the series follows Malcolm Reynolds, a former rebel fighter from a group known as the “Brown Coats” & and his misfit gang; which includes a fellow former “brown coat” Zoe, their expert pilot Wash, the bounty hunter Jayne, The naive farm girl mechanic Kaylee, A “high-end prostitute” Inara (those who watch a show notices way oversimplify if I don’t have the time to go into detail about how companions work), and two passengers turned crew Simon, and the River; the later of the two was experimented on and now appears to have psychic powers, but could just be crazy. Lastly the ship “Serenity”

To all the fanboys out there, who are currently typing very mean things about my over simplification of the series; I say to you to go tell people to watch the series so they can better understand it. Then I don’t have to type a paragraph to explain what the show is about.

Now with that all the way I want to touch on a point I think helps illustrate how car folk work and think.

Spoilers ahead I guess? The series is really old, so again GO WATCH IT!

In the episode “out of gas”. The ship “Serenity” suffers a malfunction and breaks down in an area of space off the normal trade routes and away from any reasonable chance of rescue.

The ships Captain, Malcolm Reynolds, after sending the remained of his crew out in the shuttles from the ship. Malcolm remains with the ship as it slowly looses oxygen and heat, curled up behind the controls of the ship, he starts to reminisce / dream of how he came to own the ship.

Serenity is a firefly class ship it is known for being a out of date. Several times during the show its mentioned that the ship is old, and that it’s a miracle that it’s still in sky. Even as Malcolm remembers the story of buying the ship. The sales man pitched “treat her proper and a ship like this will last you the rest of your life” as he speaks Malcolm is staring off in the back of the lot, where serenity sits, derelict.

The look in Malcolm’s eyes is one I’m sure most of us have had for a car at one point. We know it’s probably not a good idea to get this vehicle, it may leave us broke, frustrated and sore. Yet we get the car, and we may regret it, but when the moment is right and the stars align. It’s heaven, and that’s what makes it all worth it.

It’s for lack of a better word a love of automobiles, for something mechanical. I’m sure the Germans may have a better word for it, but I like the term. We can almost feel the pain of our vehicles, we have a mechanical sympathy. As Malcolm puts it, “love keeps you in the air.”

If you have someone in your life; that doesn’t understand your love of automobiles, have them watch firefly. It may give them a small insight into your psyche.

Let me know what other fictional characters you think of, who show the love of the mechanical.

This is still my favorite TV show! I have a feeling if it aired today it would be a massive hit, especially with Joss’s recognition from the “Avenger’s” movies. I still wish there would be some kind of continuation of the series (I thought “Fire Fly” was a bit of a let down).

& Yes! This is the perfect illustration of how any gearhead view’s their car... Too some it may be a junker or a money pit but to us there is nothing finer in the world!
