I’m torn between 2.

1. Narrow deserted dirt roads in the on a beautiful summer day. Like !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

2. Wide, divided road, well syncronized lights, concrete roadway (I’m going for Michigan M59 or Woodward Ave here), middle of the night, what little traffic there is all doing 55-60mph steady, windows down and music up. Just cruisin’.

Go.

Twisting mountain road, nice scenery, something like this:

So mountain cruise vs. mountain thrash? I like.

On ramps.

“Whelp, looks like I’ll just have to put my foot to the floor and get up to highway speed!”

But I don’t have to do that :(

Which of course isn't to say I don't, so it's all good.

That’s one thing I like about my mum’s Maxima: enough power to get out of the way of any problems, but not enough power that putting your foot to the floor won’t send you to jail (well, not right away, at least).

Roads that run around rivers, like the part of PA 611 and River Road that runs along the left bank of the Delaware south of Easton. Great scenery and contant gentle swooping curves. Even better when there’s no traffic and you can keep up the momentum of the car.

This is one of my favorite roads. Except for 200 yards at each end of the road there is no speed limit.

at least one lap in my personal car on an actual (famous type) racetrack. COTA, Mazda Speedway, Road America, Watkins Glen, VIR, etc. That would be a dream come true.

#1 is great for a drive in a rwd manual pickup truck. I miss going on those runs.

two lane, paved hilly/mountain twistie - but not too tight so you can still get a comfortable rhythm going and have good sight distances.

My dad had a 97 Jetta GL. It was none of those things.

It did not have enough power to get out of it’s own way.

It did not have good enough brakes to feel secure about where exactly you would stop.

Because of these things, you never wanted to be going slower than average traffic speed, because that would mean having to rug it whenever you needed to merge somewhere, and in the end still not being able to make it because the car in the desired lane was coming too fast to cut off and you’d run out of room in front of you. So, it was better to just go fast, and then you didn’t have to woorry so much about the people behind. This did cause more problems. Since the brakes barely worked and it would take most of the day to get back up to speed, I never wanted to touch them. This of course meant putting trust in the only good thing, the handling.

So if anyone in the GTA saw a beat up green Jetta cut off a semi from and ending lane and make a dive for and exit threading it's way as best as possible, that was me. Sorry. If it makes you feel any better I was shitting myself too.

In California, there's a road with no limit? That was unexpected. Looks fun!

To be fair, seeing an old Jetta weaving through traffic and cutting everyone off is pretty normal in the GTA.

No roads, just a couple dozen miles of scruffy desert with a few hundred yards of deserted beach on the other side.

Yes, a nice paved road with rising and falling sweeping corners. OK, maybe one or two really tight corners, too.

Yeah it is a great road. Technically after about 200 yards each end there is a sign stating “Speed Limit 45 Ends”. So yeah, no speed limit per say.

I have come to the conclusion that its not the crawling that gets me excited anymore, its the freeflowing cruise on a nice soft track. Man alive it feels great.

Absolutely. The feeling of hitting whoops at speed and the slight drift on a long curve make feel like you’ve accomplished something.

It’s exhilerating.

Yeah, thereabouts. And agreed. Besides, here if a road is remote enough to not be signed, the odds of there being cops are pretty slim.

A winding country road through the middle of nowhere during the dead of winter (I live in Alabama, so 40 degrees (4 C) is dead of winter) with the sun out. Preferably in the morning too.

Some Examples

1. AL-25

2. Goodwater Road

1. Back road gravel through the corn fields, typical iowan

2. Winding mountain road, near Estes Park preferably.
