My wife’s grandma has always said we were driving like Stirling Moss when we took a corner too fast for her liking. Now I know why.
You see, my wife’s grandmother is of European descent but was born and raised in Nassau in The Bahamas. She was also a teenager when the Bahamas Speed Weeks were a thing.
She told us the other night that she rode with Stirling Moss, the legendary “limey” racer, on the old Nassau circuit when she was a 17 (around 1960) and he actually taught her how to drive a stick. Apparently he did this at 105 mph (on the home straight.)
Is this true? I don’t know and have no way of backing it up, but it fascinated me.
I had intended on writing a long post about this and the Bahamas Speed Weeks but I’m a bit drunk and don’t really care . Now seems like as good a time as any to share this nugget. (Not so drunk now and changing the post time so the day crowd can see this random bit of non-news.)
For those that don’t know, the Bahamas Speed Weeks were basically the Race of Champions of their day. All the best drivers of the era (it originally ran from the 1950s to early 19060s) met in Nassau for a week of parties and some races mixed in (Gma-in-law said it was one big race at the end of the week.)
Moss won a couple times while the likes of Dan Gurney, Innes Ireland, and AJ Foyt also had some wins in the Islands.

A bit drunk? Join the club. It’s these posts that make Oppo what it is. Good stuff, and a great picture. And, I bet it’s a true story.
