Just wanted to get some ideas from OPPO on the heights of ‘90s luxury, I’ll be looking for a second car next year and since I currently dd an NC Miata I kinda want a big Luxo barge as a chance of pace. Current front runner is a Buick roadmaster (estate of course) but they seem to be pretty pricey. Next best would be a supercharged Buick riviera, they can be had pretty cheap and I’m looking to stay around $2-3k. Does OPPO have any ideas? How are the north star caddies?

Aurora with a 4.0 Northstar?

My first car was my dad’s old ’90 Legend coupe. It was nice but I wouldn’t call it a luxo barge as requested here.
A 2nd gen Legend sedan is much bigger and cushier but I still wouldn’t call it a barge.

Infiniti Q45 for that sweet sweet no-grille action.

It's on the list, any experience with one? Should say looking mainly domestic(cheap) and fwd, but also considering the mark viii too.

No personal experience, the Mark VIII slipped my mind. Lincoln all the way.

The Riviera is very good. Just so I don’t have to type it all in again, try this link.

And AMA.

Second gen Aurora suffered some cost cutting that is most apparent in the interior. Look for a 1G.
Have you considered a Mark VII LSC? Basically a comfy Mustang, and with the right wheels they look GNX levels of mean.

They range from 2k to 9k depending on condition, but you can get a well-used Lexus SC 400 for stupid cheap.

This is the one true answer. Mercedes-like quality without the heart-stopping repair bills. I see clean examples pop up on the local CL for $2-$3k all the time. An extra $1500 buys a superb example with little mileage.

My brother had a legend when I was in elementary school. Thing was mint. Blood red.

If you just want something super cozy, I must recommend a Lincoln Town car. There’s a bunch that are still pretty pricey, but you can definitely find some decent runners for 3k or so.

There is no good argument against buying an e39.

I 2nd the Lexus vote. Toyota made some seriously good cars in the 90s and this is about as good as it gets. I also like the look of it, with the one downside being it kind of looks like the avalon they sold in the 90s.

I’m going to have to posit sensible versions of some of these answers:
Buick Regal GS. Supercharged like the Riviera, but with cheaper repair costs and way more mod potential because of the parts interchange with the Grand Prix.
The E34 5 series is more reliable than the E39, and cheaper (though they’re both cheap). Early in the run you could still get a “big six” 535i.
The Northstar engine had problems. Some of the later cars had those ironed out, but by then you’re out of your price range. The Riviera is a more mechanically solid choice; the L67 is a tank though those transmissions need to be watched.
Buick Roadmaster is a good idea. The wagons are sweet but at least in my neck of the woods LT1 wagons seem to be more expensive than LT1 sedans. Don’t forget about the Caprice wagon, it’s mechanically identical...and if you’re willing to go sedan there’s also the Cadillac Fleetwood, which had the LT1 from 94 to 96.

The Aurora Bman76 posted is a 2nd gen. Those are shit. You’d want a 1st gen.
(This is my old ‘95 Autobahn)
Genuinely great car. If I could find another with the same color combo, I'd buy it in a second.

I also drive a 2004 DeVille. I bought it last February for $5k with 55k on the odometer. It now has almost 70k on it and I don't think I could ever sell it. It's hands down the best car I have ever owned.

Haven’t seen many mark vii’s but was considering the mark viii, comfy mustang is pretty much exactly what I’m going for, with the Miata I’ve got handling covered I just want something comfy and quick for occasional commuting though the Miata would probably stay my main dd. The aurora might win in the fwd though, especially for winter, although my NC hasn't been bad in the snow and ice we've had so far this year.
