Kinja'd!!!

I just placed the order for a new set of Nokian WRG3 tires and going in to Kaltire tomorrow to have them installed.

https://shop.kaltire.com/tiresdetails1/…

At a little over $800 installed (includes installation, taxes and fees), I hope these tires last me 4-5 years @ 20,000km/year... which they should given the 100,oookm treadwear warranty and given that I plan on taking care of them.

I’m going to make good use of Kaltire’s lifetime rotation and balancing warranties.

Sidenote: To maintain the tire warranty, I have to go in and have the tires rotated every 8000-10,000km... which is fine with me since the tire place isn’t far.

In the past when I got new tires, it’s always great for the first while... everything is so smooth at all speeds. And as time goes on, things happen where the tire goes a little out of balance so you get vibrations at certain speeds.

My current worn out “Goodride” brand tires (which came with the car) are fine at legal speeds. But they start vibrating at speeds of 120km/h or higher. They’re also fine on dry payment. But in wet, they’re terrible. And of course, they’ll be even worse when the snow comes.

I can’t fathom paying that much for tyres. The most I’ve ever spent was $340 installed (in 2013) and this year I spent $220 installed. With my car being as slow as a box truck running on a single cylinder, it doesn’t matter what brand I go with.

Note that $800 in Canadian funds is around US$600. And that includes 13% sales tax and a bit for environmental/disposal fees. And your Smart car has smaller tires too which tend to be cheaper.

I could, drive to the US and get the same tires installed for a bit less. But then I won’t have a warranty that I can use in Canada... nor convenient access for free tire rotations and balancing.

C’mon now, tires still matter. Braking, handling, grip, etc.

They do, very much so. But aside from snow traction and the occasional spirited drive, I look for tyres that will go for miles and miles and miles. I don’t yet have the bank account balance for fun rubber. So safety and mileage first! And for smarts, you can get both of those for a ridiculously reasonable price if you have connections. ;)

Very curious to hear your experience w/ KalTire, given that they’re the only game in Canada for Nokians! I’ve heard ok and not-so-ok experiences from friends (like telling you a tire needs to be replaced when it doesn’t...).

BTW which car are they going on?

It’s the only tire place I’ll deal with. I’ve had nothing but great service from them. I’ve been using Kal Tire since 2007 and I’ve used multiple locations and never had an issue or complaint.

Fountain tire or Canadian tire on the other hand not so much

Next season I plan on getting the Nokian WRG3’s for my Fusion as well.

I’ve never been to Kaltire... this will be the first time. But I’ve heard good things about them.

And after I placed my online order, someone from the location I’m going to called me within minutes.

And I only have one car... a 2007 Ford Focus.

You’re going to love those Nokians. Used them for winter tires on my 540. On my wife’s MDX I swear some days they could climb trees.

Sounds good so far! Definitely keep us posted.

Contemplating WRG3s for my XC90 when the WRG2s wear out...a 100k treadwear warranty would be a definite plus, especially for something that heavy!

Thanks! Same experience I had w/ Discount Tire in the states, which is good.

If the dollar stays where it is by the time the WRG2s on my XC90 wear out (hopefully not before fall next year), it’ll be three figures cheaper to get WRG3s at KalTire instead...
