When we pay for an item or service, we all expect a quality result. Unfortunately, what we receive for our investment does not always meet our standards. Case in point, this Pennzoil ad that was written by Tony Carnevale of Gawker. In this piece, Mr. Carnevale writes an entertaining feature that dismayingly includes an obvious error, he misspells Rhys Millen’s name. Now, I know what you are thinking. Why is this a big deal? Well, in most cases it wouldn’t be. If Mr. Carnevale was an average person making a post then I wouldn’t have even taken the time to write this piece. However, Mr. Carnevale (or more precisely Gawker Media) is receiving payment from Pennzoil to run this ad. Therefore, Mr. Carnevale has a duty to do his due diligence when constructing an ad that, in one way or another, will leave an impression on consumers.

In short, while most of you may view this as a minor and ultimately insignificant error, being a business owner myself, I would expect an ad that I had paid for to be, at the very least, free of errors this glaring (especially considering Mr. Carnevale makes his living as a writer).

...expecting Gawker to be held to a standard that’s not tied to page views....

I spotted a typo in your article:

an entertaining feature that dismayingly includes an obvious error

You misspelled “every Gawker story ever.”

I mean, in fairness, what kind of name is Millen, anyway? I mean, it’s not like his father was the king of the mountain...

(wait, hold on, I’m receiving information)

I take that back, his father, actually was the king of the mountain.

Well, it’s not as if Gawker has easy access to car people to fact check such things... hold a minute, this just in... there’s a room full of bearded guys calling themselves Jal...Jelo...Jelopnic? Do I have that right? Seems these guys are in the same building, and are complete pedants who argue about automotive culture all day. Who knew? Not Tony. Tony did not know.

Sadly, this is true.

In fact, I have tried to remind Gawker employees of this before but I didn’t receive any response and they didn’t change their article at all.

When we pay for an item or service

How much did you pay for this service?

Ads are one thing, but when has the presence of ads ever implied quality of any sort?

I see so many typos on Jalopnik I’ve stopped letting it bother me. I do expect better from professional writers with professional editors, but hey.

I used the first two sentences in an attempt to draw the reader into relating to what Pennzoil is experiencing.

Well, my main point was this, if Pennzoil is paying for an ad to be written by a Gawker employee and presented on their websites, then I’m fairly certain they would like it to be of high quality.

Nobody on Gawker, not even our beloved Jalopnik, truly cares about error free work. To most, it's not a big deal but it drives me crazy.
