I am not, historically, a big fan of auto parts stores. Back in the day you would go to Auto Zone and they could maybe offer some advice on parts or repairs. However, as we all know, that is no longer the case: Auto Zone and Advance Auto (I can’t speak for NAPA or Carquest, I don’t have one near me) don’t really hire car people anymore, they hire whoever is cheapest.

So naturally, I’m always looking for different avenues to find parts, and this morning I was presented with an opportunity to do so. When I left for work this morning, my P71 had a cute little puddle right inside the left front tire, caused by a leaking brake hose. Of course Advance and Auto Zone wanted 25-30 for the part and wouldn’t have it until Friday. You know who else could get me the part on Friday? Amazon. And for only $17, I’ll do that every day.

I’ll let you know how Amazon does on parts compatibility, because if I can hand my repair parts needs over to Amazon from Auto Zone, I’ll be absolutely thrilled to do so.

They are fairly accurate. I make sure to cross reference part numbers from rock auto or whatever.

They hardly stock anything anymore (except late model parts that are extremely popular). I still try to support them because when I need a jug of antifreeze, or some car wash I want to have a place nearby I can get it that same day.

Word. At this point I feel that if you get the wrong part it is your fault to a certain extent. I did a purchase for a friend in Cuba last year, almost $500 armed with only the year, make, model and vin#. Everything worked out fine. Do your homework and you should be fine.

Big fan of AM-Autoparts btw. I always give them a shot when I am looking for stuff. They don’t always have it in stock, but when they do the price is awesome and the warranty is damn good (10 years on 90% of the parts).

I still prefer going to a parts counter, especially if there is a problem with the part I’m trying to install. I hate having to ship returns.

I worked at AutoZone in 2008-2009 part-time and when I was interviewed for the job they just asked basic questions and made sure I knew generally what I was talking about. Most of the store guys only make around $8-9/hour (red shirts) and the grey shirts (managers) weren’t alot more than that.....

Funny story, the guys I worked with started using an AutoZone card that they kept behind the counter to use on all the people that didn’t have the cards. For the card, you make 5 purchases of >$20 and you get $20 on the card as a reward. They would use the reward to buy themselves candy/cokes/etc. in the store... until they got caught and almost the entire store got fired!

I like Rock Auto a lot, if I wasn’t in a rush I’d have ordered from them. But I like that Amazon guarantees it’ll be here Friday, makes me feel better.

As someone who worked in the Aftermarket, Amazon parts matching sucks.

They rely on the seller to verify the information, which is risky if they are off shore. In my opinion buy OE parts, or NAPA top line parts (or a reputable Performance Aftertermarket brand) for all safety critical components (Brakes, Wheel Bearings, Tie Rods, etc)

I always check Rock Auto first because they usually have good deals, and you can find the proper part numbers. Before I order, I double check Amazon since I have Prime so shipping is faster and usually free. So far, from Amazon, I have ordered battery cables for an Accord, and brake calipers, discs, pads, a mishimoto radiator and hoses, a radiator cap, a lightweight flywheel and clutch for a Miata. Amazon has always provided the correct part numbers for the year/make/model and the parts have always been correct upon arrival.

Amazon has been 100% accurate for me so far on parts for my ‘87 944. I’ve only ordered a couple times from them, but I make sure to check them now when I’m parts shopping. The cheap, fast shipping is great. They aren’t coming from Japan, but sometimes you need to overnight some parts, yo.

My Mustang will decimate all with $15000 worth of parts overnighted from...Seattle.
