You’d think I asked for something unreasonable...

And given its a 3 hour drive $10 seems pretty fair.

$10 for 3 hours of driving seems like a pretty good deal. I’m more concerned about the reflexive assumption that mom and dad should pay.

She suffers from being the spoiled youngest child. Thought it would change when she hit college, but nah.

If he wasn’t the it’d be fair for her to cover the entire cost, not just part of it

Whenever I give my little brother a ride to his girlfriend’s (since I usually pick him up after curfew so he can’t drive home) he knows his options are: throw me some cash, get dad to throw you some cash so you can throw me some cash, or buy me food. If she didn’t live half an hour away and if my car didn’t suck on gas, it might be different. But goddamn it adds up quick. Also, if he wanted to come home earlier he could drive himself, so I don’t feel bad about it.

$10 is nothing. I’d at least ask for $20

Ask her to price out an Uber/Lyft/Taxi for the 3 hour drive and compare costs.

I have a sister like that too. She’s 27 now and shows no sign of changing.

Here’s how I do it:

Dude asks for a ride somewhere I wasn’t going - Pay up, bitch.

Dude asks for a ride somewhere I was already going - No charge.

Dude and I plan to go somewhere together - Split the cost.

Now there are exceptions to these rules of course; women, family, and the crew.

I’d say this scenario falls into the third category. How I do it is that I don’t really worry too much about it these days, gas is cheap. I’m not in college anymore though, so I have that luxury of not having to decide between beer or gasoline.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around the whole "It's not my job" part. If she's getting a ride somewhere, the courteous thing to do would be to chip in. Hell, if she isn't going to buy gas, at least she could chip in with snacks/drinks for the road.

Back when gas was higher I paid $10 per day to commute to class.

I think $10 is more than fair but is she refuses tell her to ask your parents for the money and you could still get it from somebody.

It would work for me as I had to pay for gas and drive 8 hours to pick my sister up and bring her home from her college. But your parents are probably better than mine.

And my family wonders how I spend so much money. Umm hello I drive you around all the time and don’t ask for gas money.
