Good call. My grandfather’s full last name was Jylhanlehto and my family reunions involve Kivirantas, Heikkilas, Murtomakis . . . . I think you see the trend.
![]() 11/24/2015 at 12:00 |

Was the Jylhan part removed on purpose? Heikkilas is for sure ultra Fin!

Yes, when he joined the US military. I have his school yearbook which shows the full name. I’ve met a man whose family kept the other half (he called himself “Jylha.”) I think that is a tad bit harder to pronounce.

Question from another Finn: was the name officially changed from Jylhä to Jylha in the US or did it remain in the original form with ‘ä’ instead of ‘a’?
![]() 11/24/2015 at 12:34 |
|
No. We can’t deal with umlauts here.
11/24/2015 at 12:51 |
|
That’s what I guessed. BTW jylhä could be translated as ‘imposing wilderness’ if you didn’t know the meaning already.

Isn’t it also “forest” or “grove”?

Oh ok cool cool. Lol yeah I wouldn’t know how to pronounce that correctly. heck, people have trouble with my first name Ulysses and it’s not foreign per say.
