Since most of them (GM,Ford,Chrysler) of this era look the same, This is what I’d Daily. Example here is a 40’s Ford Deluxe. I think it would take some modern modifications to handle the task since I have a 20 mile one-way commute with 95% of that being on the highway.

Define “vintage.” Me, I’m actually planning to daily my “new” ‘88 Jeep Comanche once it’s put back together and running well - at least, through the winter, until I can bring my BRZ and motorcycle out of their winter slumber. 1988 could be registered as an antique (not going to because then I couldn’t legally daily it) and has no emissions test in MA, so maybe that’s vintage, maybe not.

That Ford is sweet. Upgrade the brakes and suspension if you can, and drop in a modern engine if you are going to DD it. The original engines just don’t like the abuse of modern commuting, modern oil and gas (no zinc in the oil, no lead in the fuel)... although there is some very much coolness to running an original engine, giving it DD duties is really hard on it.

Well I don’t care about safety, power, convenience, or handling. My commute is short and can be made entirely over back roads, so top speed can be as low as 25mph. I really just need something to keep the wind off in winter, and of course something I enjoy driving. I guess the moral of the story is: I would daily drive pretty much anything if I liked it.

I would totally take a Model T to work every day.

I came about from a similar story. My Dad inherited some money when he turned 16, so he went out and bought a brand new Lime Green 78 Volvo 242. My Mom saw the car in their high school parking lot, and started asking around to find out who owned it. Her friends found out, and asked him out for her. They went on basically a blind date, purely because she liked his car. then a few years down the road my dad was racing my Mom’s brother in his Datsun 240Z on a dirt road. My Dad took a corner too fast and wrapped the driver’s side of the Volvo around a tree, totaled the car, and walked away with a few bruises.

The closet I’ve come was driving this for two years. While it is a 1980, it’s based on a chassis that came out at the end of 1969 (as a 1970) and is literally the same except for some external cosmetics. The engine was a late 60s Pontiac 400 with a TH4oo trans.

I loved finding an empty back road with nothing modern in sight, playing some oldies and pretending I had gone back in time. This car got so much attention and compliments. I gave it to my little brother about 7 years ago and it has been an ongoing project ever since.

Kinja'd!!!

If I get to choose in this dream car scenario though, I think I’d go with an early Bronco. 4x4 for these PA winters and a removable top for the summer. WIN WIN!

Assuming “daily” means year-round, a later (1983+) Scimitar GTE - fiberglass body and galvanized chassis means it should stand up well to road salt; plus they are pretty simple mechanically and the Ford drivetrains make for decent parts availability. The shooting brake body style is also pretty practical, and, being a GT, they are pretty comfortable to live with.
