For the winter banger ‘rally’ I’m competing in (Netherlands-Germany-Switzerland-Italy-France-Andorra) I was trying to fix up a 30 year old Prelude. No use, it’s just too rusty. So I’m looking for a replacement car. Help?
Requirements:
1998 or older (required!)
Less than €1000, preferably considerably less
Valid inspection until at least March 2016 (required!)
Drivable as-is, potential problems fixable by someone inexperienced
Not too small, not overly large. Size suggestion: Mondeo/ Passat /406/Legacy
Not RWD
Location: in or near Groningen the Netherlands (postal code 9742ge) or Arnsberg Germany (postal code 59755).
horsepower in the triple digits
Interesting is a plus. A plush version is as well.
I’ve found a few contenders. Like

and

. I try to avoid the latter as it’s exactly like the Legacy I used the last time I competed, 3 years ago. I’m a big fan of the turbo Citroën, but while that platform is reliable I’m a little afraid of that turbo. I do fear the suspension of that almost 2 decades old €800 car as well, but it’s still my favourite.
Any suggestions? General model or specific car, everything is welcome.

I second the Mondeo mark 2. Get the 2 litre Zetec since they're neat looking and I like them. That's about as much logic as I can provide.

I third the Mondeo idea. What about an Escort?

I fourth the Mondeo.

Sod the Mondeo. It’s probably objectively the best car you’ll find, but, yeah, fuckit, who dreams of a road trip in a Mondeo?

How common are Rover 75s in the Netherlands?

You know what’s worse? We looked at a ‘97 Vectra. A Vectra . Luckily it sounded like a diesel, despite running on gasoline. So we went running as well. Almost mandatory seppuku avoided... for now.
I still want a Xantia. If I find a nicely optioned one with at least a 1.8L and preferably the 2.0 local to me I might snap it up.
I do have a 306 convertible standing around. But a convertible in a winter rally? Preferably not, although it does make it more challenging. It’s a bit too nice as well. I’ll keep it as a backup.

Not overly common, but they’re there. Won’t work though, while I can find many from 1999+ I can’t find a single one from 1998. So it’s too new to be allowed to compete. Moreover, the 1999 ones (excluding those with broken clutches and the like) were all generously >€1k.

No other suggestions?

I’m sure some Fiat could be found, if they sell there. What model though? The Bravo/Brava/Marea were around and there was a 1.8. Finding one might be a problem though.
Toyota Carina? There was a 2.0 petrol. Mazda 626?

Old Primera 2 litre?

Here’s what I could find near Groningen:
http://www.autotrack.nl/tweedehands/au…
Beaten looking A4, good inspection though and the 1.6 should be good, no forced induction to worry about there.
http://www.autotrack.nl/tweedehands/ci…
Relatively clean looking Xantia moose test passer (ok, not the same model) Lack of engine bay shots and the rust that appears in the one is a little worrying.

Fiat Marea, valid until march. Boring looking but pretty quick(for a banger)! 5 cylinder too for extra jalop points.

Does it really need that valid inspection until 3/2016?

If your choices are Vectra and Mondeo, perhaps consider cancelling the trip? ;)
Have you had a look if there are any left-hookers for sale in the UK? Might have to do a bit of driving back to a ferry port, but you can probably find a bargain that way.

It’s been three years already? We ARE getting old. But that’s beside the point. This has you written all over it!!!

We are getting old. You know, when I first joined Jalopnik/oppo I had never owned a car in my life. I’ve bought 10 since.
Hell yes! I’d
love
that 605. A bit underpowered probably, but it’ll do. No mention of valid HU/TÜV though. We do need a street legal vehicle.

I’d buy that Chrysler in an instant, if it’s mechanically sound. Because oddball, and the epithome of ‘carbage’. I
am
entering the car I’m buying in the carbagerun. Cover the badges and people won’t even have a clue what it is. Even with the badges on people won’t know.
And that Buick Park Avenue? If it’s half decent I could even make a decent profit on that one, after the rally. That is, if it had a long inspection. I have zero desire to find a shop willing to work on that, nor does finding parts on something so obscure sound appealing.
I like the Lancia.

I was literally about to post, ‘I know it’s not interesting, but what about a Vectra GSi?’
Sorry.
Edit: Saab 900 SET?

Checking some Belgian ads now, as I’m near-enough by, right? :D Some of these aren’t APK yet, but I don’t think you’d have too much difficulty getting them there.

That Audi just doesn’t do it for me, but I like the Xantia. I hadn’t found that one yet. The Marea is an odd but interesting choice. I don’t know anything about Fiats to be honest, are these anything one can rely on?

I like that Probe. I actually saved an ad of one earlier today, but 2 hours later it had been sold. Those things really are dirt cheap. Saab and Alfa are too new (1998 max, or you can’t enter the rally), the Audi is about the newest Audi I’d consider personally.

Not my cup of tea. I’d like a mk1 or mk2, but those are way too expensive.

I think the Buick is already way too nice for your intended purposes, but it’s just so damn cool.

I guess they are cheaper over here.

No I haven’t, thanks! I have used gaspedaal.nl, which might also be interesting to you.
Anyway, I found this Xantia via your website. Owner likes these cars, installed a luxury interior, took it all apart and cleaned everything. New spheres plus fluid, even new lacquer on the wooden gear stick knob. And just look at that engine bay. Yet, he hasn’t had it inspected in years. Stupid. Anyway, I sent him an email asking what it needs.

Well, it has the same five cylinder they shoved into the Stilo Abarth, the tune is a bit more mild on it. I don’t have any experience with them, but from what I can find (*disclaimer*: Internet research) they’re comfortable, the interior can fall apart a bit, but aside from that about average on the reliability, standard maintenance keeps it on the road like any car. Substantial body roll in the corners but great straight line speed (for the price range.)
