I’ve had the little Fiat for almost a year now and the itch is back. :(
Here’s my top 3 of terrible old cars that I want:
1. FSR Tarpan
An old Polish pick-up originally meant for farmers. I’d prefer either the classic 2.1 petrol engineor the 1.5 petrol from the Fiat 125p. I definitely wouldn’t want one with the 3 cylinder 2.5l Perkins tractor (literally!) diesel that had a top speed of 83 kph and a cruising speed of around 50... They also had no 4 wheel drive and weren’t well made, but they had a few cool features. I especially like the sliding divider wall that let you convert the car into a 6 seater by halving the bed or get rid of the 2nd row of seats to get more cargo space.
2. Mid 80’s Wartburg 353
A floaty body-on-frame saloon/estate from east germany with a 3 cylinder 1l 2-stroke motor, what’s not to love? I have quite a few memories associated with mid 80’s models as both my grandfathers had them.
3. Zaz 968 Zaporozhec
A crazy Ukrainian rear-engined economy car. Powered by a 1.0 or 1.2l aircooled V4 that made an enormous amount of racket and used crazy amounts of fuel. The legend says that the car wasn’t able to meet any sort of noise-related laws west of the USSR even back in the day. They were however exceptionally rugged and very good off-road.
How do I get rid of this itch permanently? Or is this like herpes, you get it once and it’ll keep coming back?

Gotta have the Zaz. It looks like a squished 1st gen Chevy Corvair.

I’ve always liked the Trabant as a second classic in my list after the 126! :) Like the 126, parts also aren’t that hard to find and they are surprisingly reliable.
Also East-German, like the Wartburg but 2-cyl 2-stroke, so maintenance is a breeze, and the Duraplast bodies never rust (although you have to check the frames though).
This one’s for sale for 700 Euros uy-it-now needing a little work: http://www.ebay.de/itm/Rennpappe-…
This one’s up for auction as already a runner/road legal needing a little work: http://www.ebay.de/itm/TRABANT-60…

My dad had a Trabant for a few years at one point. He could probably have one apart and back together with his eyes closed. He traded it in for a 126p just before I was born.

Wow, what a crazy bunch to choose from. Very tough decision.
I will say that #3 reminds me of a 1963 Chevy Corvair. (kinda)

Sounds like it wouldn’t be a bad choice, but it also depends if you like it / he feels nostalgic about it, but also if you want something different than something one of you has already experienced before...?
The Tarpan is certainly different!

I never felt all that nostalgic towards the Trabant, so I don’t think I’ll be deliberately searching for one. Then again, I wasn’t actively looking for a 126p either, so things may happen ;).
The Tarpan is currently top of my list, but they’re exceptionally difficult to find, especially so in a saveable shape. They were designed as working cars and they have been all ran into the ground.

Good luck in your search! Always fun to learn about obscure, interesting cars! :D
I hope you’re keeping your little FIAT if you do find a Tarpan down the road! :)

Of course I am. That Fiat is stuck with me whether it likes it or not.:D Especially now as I still haven’t replaced that damn wire. :P

Haha, I don’t think you can ever get rid of it. Old, crappy cars are a magical and fun thing. Also, that Tarpan thing is awesome, and I must have it!

Man, all over those really hit the right buttons for me. I’m on my 3rd Renault 5, so I can tell you, the itch never stops. The Zaz is so cool, but owning a Tarpan would be something special. That turd colored one is glorious.

Glad to hear it! Good luck with the wire when you get around to it! :P
