A friend called me yesterday to ask for some car advice and told me about this warranty that I’ve never heard about. It sounds like a maybe-good-deal for high-mileage drivers. Thoughts?
He drives 25k miles a year and he’s thinking about moving from an older Prius to a 2014 CPO GLK350 Diesel. The manufacturer warranty has 25k miles left on it. After that, though, an unlimited mileage extension of that warranty kicks in. Every CPO from MB comes with this for 1 yr, and he can buy 2 more years of it from MB. If he does, the dealership will tack on an additional year. So he’s looking at 4 years unlimited mileage warranty for ~$3500 on top of the purchase price, during which he’ll drive more than 100k miles.
He’s going to look at the maintenance cost over the life of his Prius, which I suspect will be low, but he’s only got 85k on it. Over 100k miles, I’ve got to think that the maintenance costs (minus tires, brakes, oil, etc) would be well over $3500 on any car, though.

Might be worthwhile on something as complex as a big Merc. The biggest thing on the Prius ought to be the battery replacement, but I think that is optional (ideal, but not mandatory).
$3500/year or $3500 lifetime? I’ve never spent more than $1,500 in a year on any one car, even decade-old VWs, and most of that was preventive maintenance. Usually more like $200-$500 if I DIY oil changes, etc.

$3500 total for 4 years unlimited miles (is what the dealer told him).

right. So he’s paying for oil changes, tires, pads, and any other wear items. But not anything covered by the standard manufacturer warranty.

Gotcha, not sure how I missed that. I think $3500 might be worthwhile insurance for a car like that (like DeMuro’s Range Rover).
But I’m 99% sure he’ll be out of pocket far more than with the Prius. It’s apples and oranges across the board.

I think 3500 for 4 years and unlimited miles is worth it especially since he drives that much. Just know that the services that have to be performed (labeled A, B or C) can range from $200-400 depending on what needs to be done. Not sure what the services for a diesel are.

he is paying incase something breaks. abut there will be a clause in there SOMEWHERE that gets them out of it.
either car max it, or save that 3500 and use it if needed.
honestly, this whole german car thing is unreliable is bull if you ask me. def not 3500 worth of stuff in 4 year unless it was beaten and abused and is a bit of a lemon if you ask me.
