If I wanted to take a Cobra kit, strip off the big flares and such and stuff an I6 under the hood? A modern day AC Ace, if you will. Maybe a GM Vortec 4.2 would be an interesting choice of engine.

Or even a TVR Speed Six?

Good choice, but dare I say, not weird enough.

This would be suitably unusual. Too much trouble to get one in the USA however.

Yeah, but your already going to have the time and money to spend on a Cobra kit with uncommon modifications. (Though I am unsure how easy it is to transport a motor and necessary parts, would it be harder than importing a car itself?)

As much as I love the s54 I’d say an s85 would be more insane for the fun of it.

That would be suitably uncommon.

Perhaps ditch the reciprocating engine and go with a four-row rotary.

If you want interesting how about a 13b rotary? The sound would go quite well with the aesthetic of the car.

If you’re looking for a straight six, go to a pro

See: BMW

Yeah but that would be more suitable in something like a 427 cobra, the main goal here is a non-widebody cobra (2 hundred something icr), a little more tame.

Ooh, good choice. Keep the Ford connection.

Or Jaaaag. Maybe a supercharged one out of a DB7...

Love me some BMW I6, but I gotta think unusual here. Maybe an M88 with the individual intake trumpets:

Anything that can fit in 32” x 27” x 29” (Size of a Ford 427) would be good to go.

Well, the Ace had an I6, but I don't know if any of the kits could accommodate the length of such an engine. That's what kits are all about, right?

I’ve put a reasonable amount of thought into this actually.

Pre-shelby, the ac ace used either a 2.0l bristol I6 or a 2.6l ford I6.

So, if you’re making a modern one then an s54 would be excellent (the bristol i6 was a copy of the pre-war bmw i6, the plans were taken as reparations).

Or, if you can get your hands on an ozzie falcon I6 that would be damn sweet too :)

Personally, if i was making one i’d use the jaguar aj6. 24v, dohc, all alloy, big displacement and a lot of untapped potential. Perfect :)

Don’t Vortec. Not even once. It’s a truck motor, and was overwhelmed in the trailblazer/ envoy/ascender/h3 and Colorado/canyon (though it had a cylinder lopped off to become an I5). You may as well use an AMC 4.0 (made famous in ‘80s-to’00s Jeeps) which tend to be more reliable but obviously less potent.

Use a Lexus/Toyota, BMW, or, for fun/punishment, Jaaaaaaaaaag engine for your I6 needs.

“2JZ Swap, Bro”

That’s way too boring though, how about a ford 4.9l straight six? HUGE bore, it probably weighs as much as the v8 so you won’t need to mess with the suspension, and there’s a lot of manual transmissions that’ll bolt up to it. Sort of (not at all) the next best thing to a jag 4.2 six, which now that I’m thinking about it, how about a Jag 4.2? That’d be cool

Could use a Ford 300ci straight six. Gobs of torque and a surprising amount of speed parts out there. And they came in absolutely everything.

I think they make the early ac bodies as a kit car now, and why not the ford 300 straight six?

I do like the Ford 300 engine. We had a ton of them in airport ground support equipment and I enjoyed the sound and feel of that motor. The vehicles weren’t the same when the switched to the V6.

Instead of a Jag I6, how about the supercharged version out of an early DB7? Same basic engine if I'm not mistaken.

Not weird enough? Shut Your Mouth Sir!

I’d say the double VANOS unit that helps the s54 sound like an angry Civic would be more than weird enough. Plus the bipolar switch that happens at 2500RPMs and changes the engine from pleasant little puppy to high-strung headcase would be an absolute hoot in a car that weighs as little as a Cobra. I’d bet it would be faster than the 429 and would handle much better due to weight distribution.
