First the story

Tonight I was hit while driving on the interstate. A car left its lane and hit me and I thought I might spin out. When I gained control I was pulling over to the shoulder and in the far right lane and the people just kept speeding I was confused and thought maybe they are running the kept on and exited. They were driving like maniacs! I realized they were running and was trying to catch them without driving like the movies. I realized they were speeding away on purpose and called 911 and described the car but I had no time to even see the license plate. I lost them when soon after they exited as they were passing cars in a no passing zone and driving crazy. I tried finding them but they were gone. The cops were no help except that they would look for the car based on my description of its color and model. It didn’t help that it was dark.

My car has a dent in the fender and scraped paint but nothing else and I am ok.

Holy crap it was crazy and happened so fast. I kinda wish I took the opportunity to speed and drive like James Bond, but who knows I could have died or something. Between talking to the 911 and being transferred to the highway patrol and trying no to drive like too much of a badass and the car being so far ahead I had no chance.

I ended up talking to a freindly highway patrol who offered no help but said I pretty much have to deal with my insurance but I did file a accident report.

Now the question

Do I file this accident report with my insurance? Is there any point?

It all depends on your coverage, the cost of the repair, and the potential repercussions. If this is your first wreck, you have collision (not just liability) and the repair cost is significantly higher than your deductible, then file. If you don’t have collision insurance or the repair is less than the deductible or there’s a good chance your rates will go up, don’t file.

It may be a moot point. The police may report it to your insurance company since you filed a report.

Unfortunatly, the way it usually works with insurance companies incentivizes a chase. If you’ve got uninsured/underinsured on your policy, they’ll cover it no problem if the other driver is in fact un/underinsured. You just have to prove it. If the other car does not stop, there’s no proof, and it’s treated like you’re at fault.

Should you report it to your insurance company? If you want them to fix it, yes. If you don’t, then no.

A similar thing happened to me, though it was less severe. I stopped, expecting the other vehicle to do likewise, but the driver instead made a U-turn in the middle of the road and fled.

Luckily the damage was minor. I only had to replace one hubcap and buff some of the other car’s paint off of mine.

I vote don’t use insurance. If they pay out for this accident and then you get into another later this first incident might hit your premium changes even more.

Good point I pretty much fixed it myself yesterday. I dont have insurance that would cover it. comprehensive is $18 more 2x a year so I dont know if that is even worth it.
