Looks like we can’t put off getting new tires on the Explorer. Does anybody have any advice on what brands to shop for or (more importantly) to avoid?

ETA: Since a couple people have asked — 2011, XLT. Tires are 245/60/18.

All tire brands make some good tires and some bad tires. Picking a tire just because of a brand is not a good way to pick a tire.

Do you want a regular highway all-season truck tire? Something more off-roady? Do you do much snow driving? There are many variables here.

I've had very good experiences with Coopers. Solid tires at a good price.

What gen explorer and what wheel size?

Regular all season, no off-roading. Not much snow where we are right now but we may be moving north next year so that would depend on how good the road crews are.

Is warranty length a fair indicator of quality?

It’s too bad about Firestone and Explorers. They make decent tires, and Ford sucks for changing the engineering recommendations of Firestone.

What year? The different years have very different sizes, and different expectations. The older ones have much more sidewall.

Bridgestone duelers

In my experience, the longer the warranty the worse the tires are. My old Kumhos had a 85,000 mile warranty and they lasted 12k miles.

Pirelli Scorpion Verde AS Plus seem to be the best rated on TireRack for an ‘11 Explorer. The price is pretty good as well.

Warranty length is a fair indicator of...warranty length.

Really there’s no universal source of information about which tires to get, but I’ve usually had good luck with making choices based on Tire Rack survey and test data.

That being said, for a good all-season SUV/crossover tire that’s supposedly decent in the winter, check out the Firestone Destination LE 2 , Bridgestone Dueler H/L Alenza Plus , and Michelin LTX M/S .
