Got my license the last week of my sophomore year - May 2006. Drove to school for my junior and senior years, 2007 and 2008. For 2006-2007, I drove my first car. 1992 Chevrolet Beretta base. 2.2 MPFI I-4 with the 3t40 three-speed automatic. Only options were cassette (lol), a/c, and center console. No tilt steering wheel, no cruise, no rear defrost, no trunk release button, not even power windows or locks. It was slow, old, and blah. But I liked Berettas (still do) and I adored it. I modded it some, adding Beretta GTU wheels and ground effects, a Beretta GT spoiler, tint, a Beretta windshield banner (duh) and a nice stereo and alarm.
It was an older lady’s car - had 71,425 miles when my grandad bought it for me in July 2005. I proceeded to drive the piss out of it as a 16-year-old boy. It broke down. A lot. Sold it for $1,500 in April 2007 with 84,000 miles. The transmission went out after I sold it, as well as the head gasket. The girl that bought it from me junked it then. :-(
April 2007 - I bought a 1999 Pontiac Grand Am GT1 with 103,000 miles for $4,500. The lady I bought it from was meticulous and maintained it crazy well. Damn thing looked new. It was a great car for me. Very reliable. And it had that “cool” factor for a high school car. Took it to prom twice. Added tint, tacky red decals, and clear/black headlights. And a cold air intake. Typical 17-year-old boy modifications. Traded it in for my Mazda3 in August 2009. The Grand Am had 131,000 miles at that point. I still see it around town. It has well over 200k on it now and the current owners haven’t had any major problems, either. Most reliable Grand Am ever?
